History in Living Colour - Friday, Period 3 (Week 13)

The town of Tombstone looked a heck of a lot like it was straight out of a Western. The buildings lined Main Street, the central point of the town being the saloon. Horses were tied up at several points along the street, minding their own business. The one noticeable thing that differed from the other simulations the class had been through was that there were no people. This time, the class would populate the town.

Welcome to Arizona circa 1881.

Alice had claimed a seat at the front of the bar. Wondering what sorts of drinks outlaws should order.

Karal, had he known what Alice was thinking, wouldn't have been able to answer, but he could say, "Howdy, ma'am," a touch awkwardly. "What can I get you?"

"Somethin' hard," Alice said, in her best Western accent. Which wasn't that great, but she seemed to be enjoying it. "Had a devil of a day. Pour it real generous and keep 'em comin'."

"Yes, ma'am." Karal hesitated, Altra peering over the bar to eye the bottles. :That one.:

Karal picked up the bottle with a flourish, popped the cork, and swirled some amber liquid into a glass, setting it in front of her. "I've got a listenin' ear as well as a pourin' hand," he said, reaching for another glass to polish.

Karal wasn't too sure how successful a bartender he'd be, but he was keen to give it a try. So, he'd donned an outfit more appropriate (http://www.amasquerade.com/images/products/1865_1890_wild_west/1800sgambler.jpg) than his robes, and tied a red bandanna around Altra's neck.

Altra was not pleased. But still, he perched on the bar, looking annoyed, while Karal polished a glass and tried to look bartenderish, surveying the room through the 'cat's eyes.

Amber sat down at the bar and wondered if cowgirls back then danced on top of the counter. She sort of thought not, so wouldn't attempt it. She did grin at Karal, thinking he looked pretty good in his bartender attire.

"Howdy, sir."

"Ma'am," Karal replied, nodding politely. "What can I get you?"

"Whiskey," she replied. "And none of that watered down stuff, y'hear?"

"No, ma'am!" He quickly found the whisky bottle, with Altra's help, and poured her a generous glass. "And how's the day been treatin' you?" he asked as he slid it in front of her.

"Thank ya kindly," she said, taking that glass and drinking nearly all her whiskey in one long gulp. "Whew, that's good stuff! It's so hot out there I'm sweatin' like a whore in church!" she laughed. "Other than that, I'm right good. How 'bout you?"

Well, Chuck was the saloon owner. So there he was. At the saloon. Owning.

Alice eyed Chuck, wondering how much cash someone like a saloon owner carried around on him and whether he had a gun.

"Evenin'."

Lola perched herself on the edge of the piano and played with her feather boa.

The only thing she really knew about the old west was from spaghetti westerns, but this was kind of fun, anyway. She wondered if she could get the player piano to play "Bei mir bist du schoen".

"Evenin', ma'am," Alice said, giving Lola a once over and a leer. She had a feeling outlaws were required to leer at saloon girls, and she wanted to be properly historical.

Lola wondered how many lesbians there were in the actual old west. Still, saloon girls weren't picky, were they.

"Afternoon," Lola attempted to drawl it out, but her German accent might've gotten in the way.

"'S a nice boa you've got there," Alice nodded. Nursing her drink. "You play that pi-ano?"

She was trying for a gruff, Western twang, but her sharp British inflection kept peeking through.

Lola twirled the end of her boa in one hand. "Ne. I sing and dance."

"Let's hear a song," Alice said, wishing she had a cigar to chomp on. Did outlaws have cigars? It seemed as though gruff lines should accompany cigars, along with three days' worth of five-o'clock shadow. So much for either, then.

Robin, his guitar slung over his shoulder moseyed over. "Howdy, you a singer?"

"No, I dance."

She might have thought he was asking about an accordion.

There was no way Robin was to miss the saloon. He came in, not disturbing the swinging doors at all, which he thought was a shame. So he went back out, found a stick, and managed to push the doors open as he came in with it, before tossing it out of the way.

Dick was playing poker with some other cowboys. He was cheating, of course. It was the cowboy way.
