The Art of War, Week #12 [Period 3, Monday]

"Are you all here?" Ghanima asked abruptly as the bell rang. "Anyone dead? Anyone kill anyone else?"

Without waiting for any sort of answer, she smiled impishly. "Good enough," she announced, hopping off her desk. "Today, we have two parts to our class. The eleventh chapter of Tzu's book speaks of both the varieties of ground found within terrain, and of leadership styles."

"I do not feel like going over territory disputes, I've done that enough this past week dealing with treaties from home that my brother has been kind enough to ask me to handle. Instead, we will look at the leadership aspects of the chapter. There are as many different styles of directing people as there are people in the universe. While Tzu has some very good, and very bad, ideas, I'm curious to see what qualities you look for in a leader."

"First, however, I want to hear your reports on your assignment."

Short lectures were good. It meant less notes for Lee to take.

Liir was looking and feeling quite a bit better and as such, the lecture was a great deal more interesting than it had been the last two weeks.

"Um," Myn said, struggling to find the right words and finally settling for 'blunt'. "I was a dog for the past 10 days, so..."

"Thing about cuttin' yourself off from the rest of the world like that method suggests is that you're cuttin' off your allies right along with your enemies, zoto." Reno shrugged. "And if people want to get in bad enough, friend or foe, they're gonna find their way. Even if it means jumpin' all the way to another world to get there. Tried it. Didn't work."

He crossed his arms over his chest. "I follow when I can get away with it. I'll lead when I gotta, and when it comes to that it's all about gettin' the job done. But I'm better off with someone in charge, zoto. Someone who understands what it means to take pride in what we're doin'."

"Of COURSE I don't agree," Agnes answered with a frown. "Blocking off your passes and roads sounds like a good way to start a war."

Ben nodded curtly. "The most effective way to consolidate control would be to completely control the message--making sure your voice is the only one they hear is essential to that. Without official records beforehand, you can't be compared to leaders of the past. Without outside voices, you can completely control what your people hear and react to." He shrugged. "I think this is only effective when the area you control is small, otherwise you spend your entire time trying to track down and destroy the voices or dissent and none at all on your actual strategy."

His lips pressed together. "This sounds like what Jacen would do."

Not a compliment.

"No," said Alice, shaking her head. "It's too draconian. You'll worry the peasants, and rightfully so, and you'll be shooting yourself in the foot sooner or later. You want messages from emissaries, such as when your neighbor to the east has been invaded by a strange force. You can't rule alone. No one can."

Reno was totally in class today, trying to puzzle out if he really did look for any qualities in particular when looking for a leader.
