History in Living Colour - Friday, Period 3 (Week 11)

Last week's inventor's workshop was replaced with the inside of a large animal fur tent. It was noticeably cold, but there were furs around if you needed them. Flamed torches brought the only light, illuminating the large throne at one end of the tent.

The Doctor gave a warning before he allowed the students to approach. "Genghis Khan this week. Emperor of the Mongol Empire, military leader, took over most of Asia during his time. You'll learn more talking to him than listening to me, but try not to antagonise him. It won't be pretty. He's a little," the Doctor tried to think of the right word, then gave up and went with "mad."

Throughout the lands that once feared the Mongols, no name inspired more terror than that of their leader, Genghis Khan. The greatest of the Asian warlords, he stood alone, revered as a god among warriors, marked out by the cold light of his grey-green eyes, the savage furrow of his brow, and the fact that he could beat the shit out of any of them.

This was the man on the throne before them. He had the look of a man who had thrown three dogs on a fire this morning because their master had gotten blood on him after being decapitated.

"Some ground rules," Khan said. "All females who address me must call me 'dear' and ask me how my day has been. Any who do not may be slain by my blade. All males must pay me a compliment, such as, 'Oh great Khan, that fur is very slimming. Your hat brings out your eyes.' Any who do not may be set on fire. Now hurry up. I have a world to conquer and if I don't get home soon, my schedule will have to be pushed back again and my son, Ogdai, will get on my case."

"Oh great Khan," Warren said. Dryly. "Your amour-propre appears to be outmeasured only by your generous noisomeness. I'm clearly in awe."

No, he wasn't. But then, he was never the sort to worry about being burned, either.

Khan nodded as if he were barely paying attention. The kid was speaking French. His people would be conquered soon enough. By May, if Ogdai was persistent and had good timing. "Yes, clearly you are. What is your question for the mighty Khan?"

Warren was now clearly amused. Slightly.

"Have you any words of advice for the sons of men who have been imprisoned for aspiring to greatness comparable to your own?"

...Well, he was curious.

"Kill your father while he is vulnerable in prison, take over his horde by force if necessary (and it will be), and do your job better than he did his while remembering that your glory will never match that of mine," the mighty Khan said. "And find yourself a good woman who loves you for you and not just the terror you can instill in her heart. They have trouble being proper wives if they're too frightened."

"Your words are very..." Uh. "Wise."

Warren was giving Genghis his 'I think you are insane' face and hoped that he'd be lucky enough for it to be interpreted as a proper sort of terror.

"Thanks."

"You're welcome," the great Khan said. There was no reason not to be polite just because he would eventually slaughter the boy's leaders, family, and pets when he took over the world.

Peyton cautiously stayed a little farther back than she might have otherwise. "Um... Hello, dear. How has your day been?"

"You know," the Mongol leader said. "Slaughtering, pillaging. The daily grind. How about you?"

"Oh, nothing nearly as interesting as you, dear," she replied. "Pillage anyplace interesting?"

Robin hid behind something bigger than he was.

"I saw you cower, little frog! Compliment me and ask the magnificent Khan a question!" the mighty Mongol demanded, one hand reaching for his sword.

"Th-that was the compliment!" Robin squeaked.

"Compliment my boots!" the fiercest warrior in all of Asia commanded. He stuck his legs out so that Robin could get a better look at the fur stitching.

Those were nice boots. "They look very comfortable."

"Thank you," the mighty Khan said genially. "Now ask a question to help yourself become a greater warrior!"

"King of the Mountain, Chinese checkers, and Slaughter All Those Who Dare Oppose the Mongol Horde," the great Khan said.

Alice did not think this Khan fellow looked so tough. She folded her arms.

"Hello, my darling dearest," she called. "How has your day been? It must have been nicer than mine. I spent it disemboweling those who displeased me."

Like, say, those who insisted she call him dear.

"I don't remember hiring you for my horde," the mighty Khan joked. "No, but seriously, I slew many opponents before coming here today. It was productive, but I'm not sure the people appreciated their deaths in their final moments."

Re: Talk to Genghis Khan

[identity profile] notyourpawn.livejournal.com 2008-11-22 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, your horde," Alice sighed. "That reminds me, my angel. Two of your horde members were over for tea, today, and whilst I was fetching a new pot, I overheard one tell the other how very shapely he found my ankles to be. I, of course, demanded that they apologize profusely to you for dishonoring the horde before impaling themselves on their swords in the most painful manner possible."

She clucked her tongue sadly. "Good horde members are so very hard to find."

"Oh, would you lay off of them already?" Genghis said. He appreciated the nagging. Most women refused to nag him properly. They certainly didn't nag his armed horde. "They're just boys being murderous, inconsiderate boys."

Re: Talk to Genghis Khan

[identity profile] notyourpawn.livejournal.com 2008-11-22 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, now they're dead, being stinky, inconsiderate corpses right next to where we were having tea," she huffed. Alice was, quite possibly, enjoying herself too much. "I don't think it's so much to ask that when we have tea, we at least pretend to be civilized. No tracking entrails on my nice clean floors. Wipe your shoes. It takes so little effort."

Re: Talk to Genghis Khan

[identity profile] laidanegg.livejournal.com 2008-11-22 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm the man of the house!" Khan said while trying not to smile. "I'll track entrails where I want!"

Re: Talk to Genghis Khan

[identity profile] notyourpawn.livejournal.com 2008-11-22 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
"Then you'll be on your hands and knees scrubbing where you want, afterwards," Alice insisted, chin set defiantly. "Or you'll be man of the shed out back, which is where you'll be sleeping."
