Phys Ed: Week 9, Period 2 (Fri. 11/7)

The gym this week was set up a little differently when students entered. In the center of the gym stood a stationary pole with a volleyball secured to the pole by a length of rope. Next to the pole stood the instructor. "I am told Tetherball is a fierce sport. Two players stand on opposite sides of the pole, one trying to wrap the tether clockwise around the pole while their opponent tries for counter-clockwise."

Ronon smacked the ball, sending it wrapping around the pole. "Hopefully it's more of a challenge with a partner. Get your uniforms on and find one. Let's see what you can do."

Try to defeat others. Let's see some ugly threading.

Grogginess and tetherball does not mix. Nevertheless, Friday in all his groggy glory stood on one side of pole, occasionally blowing his nose that wouldn't stop running. The red eyes and less than chipper disposition were a giveaway that he had developed a cold.

Francine on the other hand was disturbingly perky for someone who still tended to associate sports with How can I get injured or humiliated today? Don't you just hate morning people?

"I think this is about my speed," she said, reflexively tugging her t-shirt down a bit as she bounced up to the pole. "Balls on strings that can't come out of nowhere to whap me on the head."

"It's about my speed today too," Friday replied, mustering a smile. "Want to go first?"

"Sure!" Ball on a string. What could go wrong?

Bounce. THWAP.

Friday managed to thwap it back in her direction. Perhaps a little too wildly.

Francine jumped up to smack back at it, and didn't get hit in the face. Score!

On that front. On the tetherball front, more of a score for Friday, since she thwapped it in the wrong direction and managed to wrap it another loop around the post on his side.

Friday let it go, then moved to unwrap the ball so they could start again. "I don't think I understand this game properly," he admitted, sounding very clogged up.

"Me neither," Francine confessed. "I always thought it was 'hit the ball and whoever doesn't get smacked on the nose wins.'" She peered at him. "You kind of sound like you already lost. You didn't get hit, did you?"

"Nah," he said, then tried to quietly blow his nose. "I just have a cold. I'll try not to get too close. Wouldn't want anyone else to get it. I'm trying to pretend it doesn't exist so it'll go away and leave me alone."

Francine winced sympathetically. "Does that work? It never works for me."

"It hasn't worked so far, but I don't want to give up just in case. Although I think I might go sit down in a minute."

"We could call it a draw?" Francine offered. "Neither of us hit ourselves in the head, though, so I say we both win!"

He managed a grin. "Sounds fair to me. Thanks for not hitting me in the head."

Helen stared at the tetherball. This was yet another things she didn't quite see the point of.

Yelling loudly, Sokka ran up and gave the ball a MASSIVE smack, which ended up jerking the ball around on the string a lot but not actually wrapping it around the pole at all.

Helen ducked out of the way. "What the hell was that?"

Sokka glared at the ball, and then looked at Helen sheepishly. "Complete failage," he answered. "Utter fail."

"Is that what's supposed to happen?" she asked, still a bit annoyed. "You could have taken my head off!"

"Nooooo..." Sokka answered, himself pretty annoyed at the ball. "I think it's supposed to wrap itself around the pole. But it didn't. Maybe you should start off."

She looed at him, then at the ball and smacked it hard enough to begin wrapping around the pole.

"Right. You just got lucky," Sokka grumbled. Then he gave the ball a smack of his own, sending it swinging back in the other direction.

Robin looked up at the ball. He might need to give his opponent the first smack.

Turtle considered the tetherball, trying to calculate angles or something like that, which she thought might help make up for her physical discrepancies, and then looked up, trying to spot someone to partner with who also wouldn't so obviously beat her out. Hopefully no one tall.

Was this a sport? Really? Somehow he doubted it.
