Survive Your Own Cooking - 3rd period - (10/22)

Today there was a wide assortment of delicious and moddable fruit and alcohol in the dangershoppe kitchen. How and why Deadpool had managed to grab hold of a durian fruit, was best left unasked.

He also was in possession of a lemming. In a plastic hamster ball.

(Stupid Nate.)

"Gooood morning kiddos. As you may have noticed, there is alcohol around so this means you all need to be on your best behavior and not start drinking right now. And now just because it's before noon and that would be considered either alcoholism or camping. And I don't see and tents nearby so..."

Some time during this lecture on alcoholism, the plastic ball glowed faintly blue in a way that implied telekinesis was being used on it. It was lifted up into the air and onto Deadpool's desk behind him.

"...Don't drink kids and cook kids. It'll only end in horrible accidents that will scar you for life."

Once on the desk, the lemming steadfastly rolled for the edge. Run little lemming, run!

There was a cracking noise as the plastic ball, and lemming, hit the ground and Deadpool's attention turned away from teaching about booze. "Stop trying to do that! I'm not letting you out of the ball, you'll only give into your natural urge to hurl yourself off of things."

A beat.

"AGAIN. Okay class, how about this? If you can make delicious things with fire and alcohol and keep an eye on him so he doesn't escape, you all get an A for the day."

"So to speak," Aravis agreed, surveying their ingredients. "Have you any idea? I've never used alcohol to start a fire before -- this is a rather different method than what I'm used to."

"I think you're supposed to, like, cover the fruit in alcohol, then light it. So that when the alcohol burns off, it sorta cooks the stuff," Hurley said.

"...the alcohol burns off? Really?" Aravis tilted her head. "Then whatever is the point in using it?"

"I dunno," Hurley said. "I never actually tried it. Maybe some of it gets absorbed, too. Or something."

"I wonder if you could get drunk off it," she mused. "So...we just dip these things in the fire, and they light, and it cooks them? That doesn't seem so hard. Though I'm not sure I understand how something wet is going to light."

Aravis didn't understand chemistry.

"Oil's wet, too," Hurley said. "But that stuff really burns. So... Bananas and berries?"

"True," she agreed, nodding and reaching for a banana. "And that sounds fine to me. I'm Aravis, by the way."

Hurley himself reaches for some strawberries and a knife, to cut off the unedible bits. "I'm Hurley. Or, well, Hugo I guess, but everyone calls me Hurley."

"Pleasure to meet you, Hurley," Aravis said, ducking her head in the briefest of curtsies. "Have you been here long?"

Hurley chuckled. To think, a few days ago, he told Alice no one had ever curtsied to him before.

"I just started this fall. This is the best school ever."

Her smile widened slightly. "I've been here a year and a half, and I'm quite inclined to agree. Even if it's...strange."

"I like that it's strange," Hurley said. "I kinda... fit in better, that way."

He cut up some more strawberries, then reached for a banana.

"Don't we all?" she said warmly. "Are you from this world, then? This time?"

Re: Partner Up

[identity profile] likes-chicken.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"This world, yeah," Hurley said. "But not this time, exactly. I'm kinda from a few years ago. Not too long, but enough that it makes a difference."

Re: Partner Up

She nodded. "At least you have the benefit of some familiarity."

Hurley nodded as he finished slicing a banana. "Yeah. So you're, like, not, I'm guessing?"

"Completely separate world, which is most like this world's medieval time, from what I'm given to understand," Aravis said, making a small pile of fruit. "No electricity, no cars, none of that. But we do have magic. And talking animals."

Re: Partner Up

[identity profile] likes-chicken.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"See, I would totally trade electricity for magic and talking animals," Hurley said as he added to the pile of fruit.

"I'm not sure that I would. It's terribly convenient," she smiled.

"I guess I just like... talking animals," Hurley said. "So. Ummm. We just pour alcohol on it now. I think."

Re: Partner Up

[identity profile] notqueenyet.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
She nodded, carefully selecting some wine. "Do you think this would work?"

Re: Partner Up

[identity profile] likes-chicken.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"I... hope so?" Hurley said. "I don't really know a lot about this."

Re: Partner Up

[identity profile] notqueenyet.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"Eh, so long as it isn't like we're going to burn the school to the ground, I think it's all right," Aravis decided.

Re: Partner Up

[identity profile] likes-chicken.livejournal.com 2008-10-22 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"This room is extra safe," Hurley said. "I think." He nodded. "Go ahead and pour it on."

Aravis did, pouring...probably more than they needed, really.

Girl liked her wine.
