The Library; Monday [ 10/20 ]

Cal realized that he could only convince himself that he wasn't really nervous for so long. All his efforts came crashing down when he managed to spill his coffee all over the desk and, in the scramble to clean it up, hit his head soundly from underneath, and then fell backwards only to smack his head against the wall as well.

And then, when he sat down, the chair fell out from underneath him.

Actually, once he finally did manage to sit down, button up his jacket in hopes to cover most of the coffee stain, and then cleaned up the desk, he told himself that maybe it wasn't nervousness after all at all! Fandom Weirdness! That had to be it! It was just Fandom giving him a bad, bad...really bad morning...

He let out a little groan, knowing he couldn't just hide under the desk, and waited for the oppression of his fate to just weigh him down completely and crush him.

"No wonder he had to flee, he'd be killed easily." Temari, queen of the bizarre statements.

Cal couldn't disagree with that one. "Not everyone's built to fight, though," he added, feeling a need to defend Chapter Eleven at least a little. Even if he did spit in Cal's face, slam his head into doors, he was still his brother. He had been a damn good one, too, in light of this whole identity business.

"They recruit normal people to fight where you're from?" Temari asked, curious about this part of his world.

Cal nodded. "I don't know if it's changed at all, but in the last war from my time, they started a draft. If you were male and over the age of eighteen, you were eligible. They'd pluck a date out like a lottery number, and if that was your birthday, you were off to war. Or Canada, to try to get out of it."

"That doesn't make any sense."

"The war itself didn't make any sense," Cal admitted, especially since he knew that was true and it wasn't just a case of him not paying attention to social studies or the news. "It was all the way in Veitnam, and we were doing a shitty job, and no one wanted to fight it, so they tried to draft people in, but if you don't want to fight a war..."

He wasn't sure if he needed to finish that thought or not, frowning a little. Would Temari think that people who had no desire to fight in a war had no point in being in it...or would she think something much worse about people who didn't want to fight?

There were many factors to be added into it. "Why were you there then?"

"I never paid much attention in social studies class," Cal admitted. "I'm sure it had something to do with nukes or Russia or just proving that we're the country with the biggest dick."

Temari frowned at that. "I think I prefer my smaller world to that," She said after a moment.

"I don't think I can blame you there," Cal agreed, a little faintly, because this stuff was all way over his head, but it was still not a bad diversion, considering he hadn't even once thought about earlier than morning through a good chunk of the conversation. And, somehow, he felt better knowing that the whole world kind of sucked, even outside of his own concerns about his deformity.

Temari nodded again, calmly moving onto the next subject. "Does this mean we go drinking?"

"I never agreed to any drinking," Cal pointed out after he took a moment to catch up with Fanbutt on the switch. "You only mentioned it in passing as a possibility if I really needed it."

Of course, now he had to decide if he needed it.

"I don't drink, anyway. What I had at Caritas that night was the first drop of alcohol I've had over a year."

"Fine, you can have water and I'll drink for the both of us," Temari said with a grin.

"I've got self-defense club after this," Cal mentioned, knowing full well that this would probably only call for a postponing for a later time rather than just jogging off immediately.

What was with ninjas and wanting to drink with him lately, anyway?

"Is that a no?"

"Why do you want to go drinking, anyway?"

Note how he wasn't directly answering the question.

"I offered." Avoidance was always fun.

And, somehow, Cal was thinking he shouldn't look that gift horse in the mouth.

"...I could meet you there after my club?"

"As long as tonight works for you," Temari said, nodding. "This coming weekend..."

She made a face. "I might have my brother's arriving."

Cal gave a faint grin. "I don't have any plans," he said. "And maybe you should save that topic for once we're there."

"I'll need a lot of alcohol for that," She muttered, shaking her head. "I'll meet you there."

"I'll buy you a drink," Cal said, "since you did so well on your quiz."
