Ethics [Tuesday, October 7, 2nd period]

Today the class was meeting in the Danger Room.

"Welcome to your midterm," Anakin said, pacing across the flight deck of a ship. Behind him, thousands of pricks of lights showed that a space battle had been paused for him to talk. "Today, you will get to be Jedi."

His eyes twinkled at Tahiri before going flat. "Or try, anyway. Your mission," he said, striding over to a three-dimensional schematic of the ship, "is to rescue the Chancellor of the Republic, who has been kidnapped by a General Grievous, the leader of a Separatist movement. There's also another fearsome warrior aboard, a Lord of the Sith named Count Dooku. He is not to be underestimated. He took my arm off when I was 20."

He shrugged it off.

"Regardless. You will be paired up and rescue the Chancellor. Alive, please. Your mission is to fight past the droids and the Sith Lord, get back on a different ship and the hell off of this one as quickly as possible."

He waved his hand towards the control panel. The students would now find themselves in brown robes and holding unlit lightsaber hilts (well, except for Jan. Anakin hadn't figured out how that could work). They would work like the real things, but only in the Danger Room.

Their reflexes, regrettably, were what they had come in with.

"Try not to die," Anakin said, "and for the love of the Force, don't do stupid things with your lightsabers like try to skewer your classmates or write your name in the floor." He then listed off the pairings:

Jess looked back and forth between Jan and the droids. "I can try," he said, grateful to be height challenged for once.

With a whinny of defiance at the droids and another duck, Jan spun back to stand next to Jess. "I will do my best to keep you on," he promised. "But make haste."

Growing up in the city hadn't given Jess many opportunities for horse riding, but getting away from the droids gave him enough adrenaline to try to get on Jan's back.

Not that he worried that Anakin would program the room to let them get hurt or anything.

As soon as he was up, he grabbed on tightly to Jan's robe. All the "riding a unicorn" jokes could be made after they got through without him flying off.

Jan shifted his feet, the extra weight changing his balance, waited until Jess felt settled, and then he charged, keeping his gait as smooth as he could, ready to shift under Jess if he started to slip. "Out of the way or we will trample you into dust!" he yelled.

Somehow, Jess managed to use his free hand to grab his lightsaber hilt, making sure to hold it out away from Jan as it came on. He had to admit, some of Jan's enthusiasm was starting to get contagious.
