Ethics [Tuesday, October 7, 2nd period]

Today the class was meeting in the Danger Room.

"Welcome to your midterm," Anakin said, pacing across the flight deck of a ship. Behind him, thousands of pricks of lights showed that a space battle had been paused for him to talk. "Today, you will get to be Jedi."

His eyes twinkled at Tahiri before going flat. "Or try, anyway. Your mission," he said, striding over to a three-dimensional schematic of the ship, "is to rescue the Chancellor of the Republic, who has been kidnapped by a General Grievous, the leader of a Separatist movement. There's also another fearsome warrior aboard, a Lord of the Sith named Count Dooku. He is not to be underestimated. He took my arm off when I was 20."

He shrugged it off.

"Regardless. You will be paired up and rescue the Chancellor. Alive, please. Your mission is to fight past the droids and the Sith Lord, get back on a different ship and the hell off of this one as quickly as possible."

He waved his hand towards the control panel. The students would now find themselves in brown robes and holding unlit lightsaber hilts (well, except for Jan. Anakin hadn't figured out how that could work). They would work like the real things, but only in the Danger Room.

Their reflexes, regrettably, were what they had come in with.

"Try not to die," Anakin said, "and for the love of the Force, don't do stupid things with your lightsabers like try to skewer your classmates or write your name in the floor." He then listed off the pairings:

Aww, he looks so scared. And he says something about a Sith Lord behind you? That's probably not good....

Peyton took a deep breath, made sure Penelope was safely with her and headed in to try and save the Chancellor.

"Not that I am not pleased to see two Jedi," the Chancellor said with a slightly strained smile, "but I do wish you hadn't come."

Penelope peeked over at the Chancellor, blinking.

"Why is that?" Peyton asked. Wasn't this the point of their exercise?

"Behind you," the Chancellor said simply.

And lo, there was a distinguished older gentleman stalking towards them, red blade extended. "Did you really think it would be that easy?" he asked.

Turning around, Penelope gasped and instictively she brought her lightsaber up. "Peyton!"

Peyton put a hand out to make sure Penelope stayed safely behind her and turned the light saber back on. "Well, I was hoping," she said, stepping forward with the saber at the ready.

Yeah, she was definitely going to get her ass handed to her here.

"Do they not even teach Jedi how to hold a lightsaber correctly any more?" Dooku asked disdainfully as he approached, then lashed out with the weapon.

"Apparently not," Peyton said, deciding it would just waste breath she'd probably need to try and explain she wasn't a jedi.

"I kidnapped the Chancellor," he said, rolling his eyes as he aimed his lightsaber at her head. "I thought they'd at least send some Jedi I've heard of."

She brought her own up, trying desperately to block his.

"Penelope! Get the Chancellor out of here!"

It was worth a try at least.

Penelope ran to the Chancellor. "Come on, please!" she yelled, reaching out to grab his arm.

"I would very much like to, my dear," he said with a small smile, "but my hands are tied."

He was strapped securely to the throne.

"I could very carefully use my lightsaber to free you?" she said, hoping that she could do this even as she lit it up.

Firekeeper and Blind Seer led the way into the room where the Chancellor was being kept, lightsaber ignited and hackles raised, respectively.

Agnes followed them in, looking nervously over her shoulder in case the droids came back.

A distinguished looking gentleman was strapped to a throne in the center of the room.

He didn't look entirely pleased to see them.

"Count Dooku will be here any second," he hissed. "Get me out of here."

Agnes was properly scared and worried, really she was.

She was just also giggling.

The giggling resulted in an odd pang of homesickness for Firekeeper, who was reminded briefly of Edlin. It's the kind of reaction he would have in a situation like this.

"Is what we are here for," she informed the Chancellor loftily.

She crept closer to him, thumbing off the lightsaber and reaching instead for her Fang at her side. The unfamiliar weapon was a good one, but it was just that: unfamiliar, where the small dagger was not. If she was going to be doing something involving someone else's limbs, she'd rather try to work with a weapon she knew well first.

"Jedi," a scornful voice said from behind them. "And Jedi I've never even heard of. How disappointing."

Count Dooku swept up, robe swinging behind him. "It won't matter when you're dead, of course."

Agnes turned and backed away from the imposing figure. "I'm sorry," she told him, the giggles suddenly dying. "I mean, believe me, I know from bad names, it's just... It's hard to take seriously someone whose name is Dooku."

She wasn't intending it to be psychological warfare, but... Well, it could work as that.

Agnes... kind of had a point, with that. With a smirk, Firekeeper put her Fang back in its Mouth and turned her attention back to the lightsaber, reigniting it and taking steps towards Dooku.

Dooku rolled his eyes. "Oh, how very droll," he said, then slashed his lightsaber out towards Blysse's arm.

Okay, Blysse and Blind Seer could do the fighting, for now. Agnes crossed over to the Chancellor -- she'd finish what Blysse had started and free him, and THEN go be useless over in the fight.

"Sit very, very, VERY still," she commanded him, as she carefully cut the straps with her lightsaber.
