Detention - 10/4 - Saturday morning

On the door, then names were written.

Abby Irene had been working most of the evening in the Danger Shop and so her hair was a little bit out of sorts as the students walked in. Smiling, she straightened it with her hand before looking over the assembled.

"It seems that you young ladies and gentleman have proven to be unable to conduct yourselves properly in an academic setting. Thankfully, we are not living in my day and age and have been provided this lovely educational tool with which to perhaps correct as opposed to simply punishing such behavior."

"You will be attending a small party from my own world and it will be your duty to act as fits the circumstances."

Peyton froze, then quickly hurried in the direction of the scream.

In a parlour not far from the main hall, Ceceilia stood weeping at the door. Within, Jacqueline layon the ground, no life in her, no breath shifting her body. A glass of wine was spilled near her hand and the brilliant medallion she had been wearing this evening, the one which had matched her eyes so handsomely, seems darker, the sparkle gone.

Peyton went over and dropped to her knees beside the body, checking for signs of life, a pulse, a breath, anything.

Ceceilia shook her head, over and over and over.

There were no signs of life, no pulse, no breath.

"She's dead," Peyton said, looking up at the other woman. "What happened?"

Ceceilia nodded almost too fast, pointing to the wine.

"She was just drinking! She was drinking and we'd shared the glass. But now--"

And she started weeping again.

Peyton looked at her, eyes wide. "You drank from the glass too? How do you feel? Are you all right?"

She nodded, fast and terrified.

"Fine, except--"

And she pointed at Jacqueline.

"You think she was killed," Peyton said. "Why? Why would someone want her dead?"

"I don't--" and something lit her eyes as she realized she was in the room with her.

"My husband. They'll suspect us, considering the relations between the duke and my husband."

"Us? As in you and me, us?" Peyton said looking shocked. "And what exactly do you mean, the relations between the duke and your husband?"

She looked at the girl like she had a second head.

"It's no secret that my husband would like to see the Crown's influence in the New World decline and as the representative of the Crown, with New Amsterdam his city, Duke Richard and he..."

"So if she was dead..." Oh boy. "Okay, assuming it wasn't one of you, who do you think it might have been?"

Before she could answer, the room was filled with people, Peter Elliot first among them, with Simon LeMarque behind him. Last to come to the room was Duke Richard, who gave a great shuddering gasp as he saw his wife on the ground.

He went to her even as Elliot sent LeMarque towards her and the Duke nearly struck the young man.

"Keep away from her, you--"

"He's a sorcerer, Richard," Elliot reminded the bereaved duke, "wouldn't you rather find out who might have done this, or what might have done her in?"

"As if I'd trust your trained dog!" Richard snapped back, but something in Elliot's face made him step back and let the sorcerer approach. The young man picked up the glass of wine and swished the remaining liquid around in the glass before pulling out a wand and pressing the whitened tip into the liquid.

It remained white.

"No poison," he said to all of them and Ceceilia sobbed in relief.

"I think the woman was poisoned somehow, though," Peyton said. "Is there some way to check her?"

Simon looked at her for a moment before reaching down and touching his wand to Jacqueline's body.

The tip turned black.

"Poison," he agreed.

"So..." she swallowed hard. "What do we do know? What does this mean?"

He pointed to the glass.

"We know that the glass does not contain poison. But it is part of my job to watch these things and at no time did I see her eat anything."

Ceceilia was saying something to the Duke behind them.

"She didn't eat anything! I was watching. I wanted to see if she liked the sandwiches only she didn't take any..."

"Could it be on the glass?" Peyton asked, glancing back towards Ceceilia. "Something that was absorbed through the skin?"

He held up the glass.

"I would be dead by now."

But he put his wand to the glass and it stayed white.

She sucked in a breath of air, bizarrely glad he wasn't. "Then... how?"

He spread his hands.

"If I knew that, I believe the Mayor would be far more pleased with me than he is."

He considered the glass for a moment before turning the wand backwards and putting the end into the glass.

The tip turned red.

"Now, that is queer."

"What?" she said curiously.

"The wine has been enchanted."

"To kill her?" Peyton asked, feeling totally over her head. She had to keep reminding herself that none of this was real or she'd be getting really freaked out.
