Detention - 10/4 - Saturday morning

On the door, then names were written.

Abby Irene had been working most of the evening in the Danger Shop and so her hair was a little bit out of sorts as the students walked in. Smiling, she straightened it with her hand before looking over the assembled.

"It seems that you young ladies and gentleman have proven to be unable to conduct yourselves properly in an academic setting. Thankfully, we are not living in my day and age and have been provided this lovely educational tool with which to perhaps correct as opposed to simply punishing such behavior."

"You will be attending a small party from my own world and it will be your duty to act as fits the circumstances."

"The wine has been enchanted."

"To kill her?" Peyton asked, feeling totally over her head. She had to keep reminding herself that none of this was real or she'd be getting really freaked out.

He shook his head.

"Wrong color. Red would be a transformative working. Just as the tip turned black to show poison, death."

"They wanted to - wait - Could someone have poisoned her and then transformed it so that it wouldn't be poison after she'd drunk from the cup?"

He shook his head.

"The magician would have had to be in the room, and I happen to know that the lady Ceceilia is not a sorceress. Check for yourself: her breast is bare."

"Her... um... she looks well-covered to me," Peyton said, glancing over at the woman in question.

He pulled his vest to the side and all that was between his skin and her eyes was a thin white shirt. A black alchemical design was dark against his skin.

"This mark would be on her should she have any schooling in thaumaturgy. I assure you, she is no sorceress, and as she was the only one in the room, your theory isn't possible, unfortunately."

She reached out unthinkingly as if to touch the mark on his skin. "That... you're a sorcerer?"

He didn't mind and in fact gave her a warm, somewhat inappropriate smile.

"A thick mark shows someone who's taken schooling. The outline on mine shows that I have graduated."

She traced the outline delicately. "Then you're very talented, right?"

The smile doesn't slip.

"Talented enough," he said with some humility. It is, after all, a black mark as opposed to a red. Black was the mark of a lesser school; red was used for the great schools.

"I guess I'm not familiar with all of this," she admitted, withdrawing her hand slowly. "So, is there some way you can... use that wand and determine what happened here?"

He shook his head.

"My wand is only good enough to detect magic. It's been... very useful, so I have this as a prepared charm.

"I could no more do that than fly."

"Well, you're far more talented than I've ever dreamed of being," she said. "So, what can we do to figure this out?"

"Perhaps put the clues together as they are?"

He sighed and ran a hand through his hair.

"One, we know that there was no sorcerer in the room at the time. Two, we know that the lady had a medallion that would neutralize any magic near her heart. Three, we know that something has been done to the wine but that it is not poisoned. Four, we know that she was, in fact, poisoned."

"God, I'm bad at this," Peyton said. "Could she have been allergic to something in the wine or that the wine was changed to?"

"My wand wouldn't have called it poison for a simple allergy," he said thoughtfully.

"The wine was transformed through magic..." he muttered.

"What sort of magical transformation could have been done to the wine? And why? If it wasn't to hide a poison..."

"Any number of things," he admitted though his lips quirked in a faint smile.

"Hopefully not from water to wine. I would hate to be a party to blasphemy."

She started to laugh despite the situation, quickly covering her mouth and hoping no one had heard. "So somehow the poison got into her system despite the wine not being poisoned - though it was changed. Something she ate? No, the other lady said she hadn't eaten. And... are there other sorcerors here tonight?"

He shook his head.

"Not to my knowledge and generally, there aren't too many of us about.

"It has to be the wine. There's no reason for the wine to have been transformed..."

"What if she was given part of a poison earlier and whatever the wine became is like the second half - neither part dangerous unless mixed with the other?" Yeah, she was grasping at straws here.

"What the wine 'became'?"

He looked at her curiously.

"What it was transformed into," she explained. "Is that even possible?"

His eyes went wide.

"Unless it was transformed into wine."
