The Library; Monday [ 09/22 ]

When considering the possible things that he could do when he opened the library to keep himself from getting bored, Cal considered three different things. The first was the obligatory studying for school. The second consisted of studying for the play. The third, which would be more time consuming and therefor what he would likely pursue, was to track down some titles he remembered from Dr. Luce's office, especially vivid in his head after telling Amber about him on Friday, and see if they existed in the library.

However, once he did, in fact, open, and saw the residual results of all that research done over the weekend because of that island, Cal realized that cleaning up after the fact was going to keep him plenty busy enough.

"I'm not allowed to come see a friend now?" She asked dryly.

"I didn't say that," Cal said, trying not to sound defensive, especially since he really didn't feel he had anything to be defensive about. "It's just...you know..." He shrugged. "Books. Whooo." He twirled one finger in the air.

"Maybe a book on geography?" She suggested. "So I know where the hell we are next time this island moves."

And that got a bit of a snort out of Cal, grinning as he cocked his head in one direction and turned to move that way, waving a hand for Temari to follow him. "You can try," he said, "but I think if we keep moving to places like that, you won't find them on a lot of the maps here. I could be wrong, though. Who the hell knows with this place?"

"Anything would be better than this," She said, following him.

"Than what?" Cal asked, pausing a moment to remember exactly where the geography section was, and then resetting his course.

"Not knowing what the hell people are talking about half the time," Temari replied, carefully avoiding looking at any one thing too long.

"Even aiming for half the time," Cal mused with a dry grin, "you've definitely got a lot of reading ahead of you. And, oh, look at this." He stopped, turning toward a shelf and opening up his arms. "A whole case of world atlases to begin with. And this is just the world as I know it. There' probably about fifty different other ones beyond this."

Well. That was a lot of books.

"I think this world is enough for now."

"Shall we start on a larger scale?" Cal asked. "Or narrow it down to just one region and work your way out?"

Temari reached out, running her fingers over the spines of a row of books. "What do you suggest? This is your world."

"Me?" Cal asked, frowning a little because there it was again. Since when did Fanbutt ever care about what he thought? Sure, it was just geography, but it seemed...unnatural. He shrugged. "Hard to say. I'd either start with the whole picture and get a global atlas, or start local, with some maps of Virgi-- Err, Maryland, now, I guess."

Blissfully unaware of the passive-aggressive attitude, Temari nodded. "The whole picture. Distances here seems to be much longer than home."

Cal nodded. "Good choice," he said, reaching for a nice, fat world atlas, and pulling it from the shelves. "Let's go get this checked out for you and then I'll quiz you next week on all the European capitals."

That got an amused snort. "Are you actually going to quiz me, Sparkles?"

"I am now, Fanbutt," Cal, smirking despite himself, had no intention of actually doing it until she had to ask.

"On what part will you quiz me on?"

"I know I said Europe," Cal said, "but I'd fail that quiz too if I took it. We'll start with the United States, since that's where you are. All the states, and all the capitals. Think you can do it?"

That sounded easy enough.

"Deal. I'll be back next week for your quiz."

"Excellent," Cal preened proudly like a doting professor as he handed the atlas out to Fanbutt. "Shall I expect you at the same time?"

Grabbing it from him, she rolled her eyes. "Brat. I'll be there."

"I look forward to it," Cal nodded. "And, if you get Michigan wrong, I'm sorry, but we can't be friends anymore."

"That's a town, right?"

She might have been joking.

Cal stared at Temari for a moment. And then he turned around, shaking his head, and waving his hand dismissively. "You know, I really shouldn't keep you. You have got a lot of studying to do, Fanbutt."
