Sex Ed, Wednesday, Period 2, Class #1

When the students entered, they found that on each of the desks was an 8.5" x 11" piece of white cardboard, a printed list and colored markers. A young, pale man with tousled bronze hair and a beige shirt stood at the front of the room.

"Welcome," Edward said, once the students were seated. "This is Sex Ed. I am Edward Cullen. I know that I look young, but I am older than I appear and I have a graduate degree in medicine." Two, actually, but he knew that would sound unlikely for a human as young as he supposedly was. "You may call me Mr. Cullen, though. Dr. Cullen is my father." He smiled, though he did not expose his teeth. "I would like to have two teaching assistants for this class. If you are interested, talk to me after class or in my office.

"This semester, we will deal with a number of delicate subjects. Know right now that the number one requirement for this class is respect. You must show respect for me as well as respect for your fellow students. There will be no crude remarks, vulgar language or snide comments. We must establish an environment of trust.

"I know how much pressure there can be to relax your values in exchange for a bit of fun. I want you to be there for your fellow classmates and provide a support system. There is plenty of fun to be had without giving in to base urges. One day, each of you will find your soulmate. Do you want to give the most important person in your life a gift that is tarnished and worn or do you want to give them a gift that is fresh and new?

"If you see any of the people here," he gestured around the room with one pale hand, "in a situation which may lead to regret, please step in. We are stronger together than we are separately."

"To begin, we will create a totem 'pole' that represents us together. I would like each of you to choose your totem animal from the list on your desk. Draw that animal on the cardboard in front of you. Then post your totem over there." He gestured to a board on one side of the classroom. "When everyone is finished, you will introduce yourselves and explain why you chose the animal you did."

[OCD coming up.]

[Reminder: Edward is telepathic.]

"Marco, this is a jaguar - " It could have passed for most four legged animals "-and um, jaguar's are awesome and apparently they're chaotic and shape shifting and yeah."

Joan blushed when she realized that this was the boy she had been talking to the other day.

He was totally cute.

If Marco had known what Joan was thinking, he would have grinned. Instead, he just smiled and gave a small wave.

Joan waved back, smiling even though she knew her cheeks were bright pink.

"I'm Angela, and I picked this one--" she said pointing at her drawing. "The otter." Just in case anyone couldn't see it. If you could, it was cute and actually resembled its intended creature.

"I really liked the description. Playful, friendly, and it's adorable."

"I'm Kaylee," she said cheerfully, waving and holding up her picture of what appeared to be a black and yellow striped oval with wings. "I picked a bee! 'Cause...well, the description fits me the best. I like 'em, too, 'less they're suddenly inclined to sting me."

She paused. "I don't got a stinger or nothin', though, don't worry. I'm like a harmless bee! A unsting-y one!"

"Hi," she began, smiling easily, "I'm Amber Atkins and I chose the porcupine. Innocent, companionable, and trustworthy. I think that's pretty much me. I'm not at all prickly though. I know that's not in the definition but you'd just think, right? With a porcupine and all. Anyway, yah, here's my drawing." She showed her white cardboard and in the center was a decently drawn porcupine. She was better at flowers but whatever.

"I'm Chuck. I chose the coyote," He held up the drawing, which had four legs but other than that resembled a tan-colored blob. "It was down to that or the wolf but I think the whole tricky thing applies to me more."

"Claire," Claire said, with a little wave. She held up a fairly accomplished sketch of a bird. "I chose a raven because, um, it says they're introspective and tricky and I kind of am too. Plus they signify death and I grew up in a funeral home."

Gwen held up a half-decent sketch of a deer. "I chose a deer," she said. "Mostly because I like deer."

"I'm Joan and I decided on a dragonfly because people tend to think I'm flighty and I have a great imagination," she explained.

Her great imagination clearly did not extend to her artistic skills.

"I'm Kevin and I drew a tiger because, um, it's a tiger." He smiled, obviously proud of his choice.

"I'm Toshiko," Tosh said shyly. She didn't really like speaking in front of the entire class. "I, um, I chose the dolphin because it's a lovely creature and the description is a bit like me. Sort of."

"Hi," Eric said, a little shyly. "Uh, I'm Eric. I went with an armadillo," and here he held up his picture; it was cartoony, and probably not entirely accurate, but it was at least recognizable as an armadillo, "because I try to look before I leap."

Maybe not entirely accurate, but it sounded good. That was what counted, wasn't it?

"Hey," he nodded to the class, shifting the weight between his feet in a slight shy fashion as he held up his drawing, "Cal Stephanides. I picked an armadillo for my totem because," it was easy to draw and it wasn't a damn butterfly, "I think it really fits me. I'm pretty cautious," with good reason, "although probably not as safety-orientated as I should be, in all honesty. It still felt like the best one for me. Maybe the seal, but I probably couldn't get away with an armadillo seal." He gave a slight shrug for his conclusion.

"My name is Triela," Triela scowled. She was probably going to do that a lot in this class.

"I drew a bear." Well, a teddy bear. Quite well-rendered, too. Just not very scary looking.

"I like bears."

"Warren Peace," and there was a pause while Warren waited out any potential snickering over the pun. He'd take names and add them to his list of people to glower at, later. "I chose the badger. Mostly because 'aggressive' was in the description and it jumped out at me."

Though, truth be told, he was known to be courageous, healing, and energizing from time to time, as well. Not that he'd admit to it.

"Blair Waldorf," Blair said. "I agree that we should rise above our baser instincts, particularly as a way to honor those we love. It's refreshing to see that kind of mindset be championed."

Blair may have shot a so there look in Chuck's direction.

"I picked the fox for my totem," Blair continued, holding up her drawing. "Like it I value quick wit and diplomacy. Also my looks are described as foxlike in the books."

"I'm Jenny and this is a drawing of a badger." It was so a badger. It might have looked like a malformed possum, but it was a badger. Trust her on this. "Badgers are apparently courageous and aggressive, and they're also healing, which, hard to kill, that's me, and." Sparks flew around her fingers. "Energizing." A pause. "Oh, and they're also really cranky little buggers, which is me to a T as well."

"I'm Toby and I drew a swan because it swims." Toby really liked the water he'd drawn surrounding the swan.
