Library [3.09]

Opening the library on a Wednesday was a new experience. As was Altra's bristled fur and puffed tail.

Since Karal didn't know what was up with the 'cat, and Altra was disinclined to share, he simply sighed and went to make sure all was in order.

"Professor Next," Karal said. "Altra," he stroked the Firecat, "Jumped us into fiction with her, to the great library." Karal did miss her a great deal. "Even with fictional characters coming to life, I still think our library is stranger, and Special Collections..." He stopped, looking uncertain, then continued, "I think it is self-aware."

That got a couple of raised eyebrows from Indy.

"You're not trying to pull my leg are you, kid?" he said humorously.

He shook his head. "No! I give you my word. I've been there a few times, and each time, well, it felt aware. It's only a feeling." But it was a strong one.

"A feeling huh," Indy said looking at the door. "I've been getting one myself. It gives me a bit of the creeps."

"You are not alone in that," Karal said. "Every time I have been in there, it has been different, but it is always creepy. I don't think it means any harm, though. One of the school's past principals was thrown in there, she was truly evil, and she has never escaped. I think, I think Special Collections is made to hold dangerous things."

That brought a strange little grin to Indy's face. "A principal?" he asked. "Remind me to stay the kids' good side."

Karal flushed. "Hopefully, it will never happen again," he said earnestly.

Indy tilted his head at that. "She was really evil?"

"She truly was," Karal said seriously. "Her greatest pleasure was the pain of others, physical and mental."

"Took things a bit to an extreme, then?" Indy asked.

"I, yes," he agreed, uncomfortable at the memory. "She did."

Indy frowned at that. It was one thing to try and maintain discipline in a classroom. It was another to be vindictive.

"Well one of these days, I'm going to need to check out Special Collections," Indy decided. "If I'm going to take this job seriously. You may have to give me some pointers."

"I'd be happy to come with you," Karal offered.

"Are you sure that won't be a problem with..." Indy trailed off not wanting to mention Karal's disability.

He frowned in confusion, trying to puzzle out what he meant, then smiled as understanding dawned. "I can see through Altra's eyes," he explained, resting a hand on the Firecat's head. "Everything is taller and paler than it used to be, but I can see in the dark, so it mostly balances out."

Indy looked at the cat and then back at Karal with a confused expression on his face.

"You can see through the..."

He looked at the cat again.

"Really?"

Altra rolled his eyes and yawned, looking smug. "Altra is a Firecat, an avatar of Vkandis Sunlord," Karal explained. "And, umm, I am a Sun-priest of Vkandis."

Indiana looked at the cat again and then back at Karal. "Sun Priest of Vkandis," he repeated. "That's a new one for me and I thought I knew all the religions."

He kneeled down to study Altra. "So you're an avatar, huh? I don't think I've ever met one in person."

:I am,: Altra told him, sounding smug. :I've never met a librarian in a hat before, so we're even.:

"Vkandis Sunlord holds His hands over Karse and Iftel," Karal said. "He has manifested in this world, but Altra says that is only because I'm here."

Indiana pulled back at the thoughts in his head and peered closer at Altra.

"Did he just do what I think he just did?" Indy asked Karal.

"He did," Karal confirmed, and Altra blinked mildly at Indy. "Among other powers, Firecats can speak mind to mind."

Indy was now peering at Altra again very closely. "That's incredible," he replied. "Forgive me but I've never experienced anything like this before. This Vkandis? He's a sun god, correct?"

Karal nodded. "Vkandis Sunlord is a god of sun and of fire."

"Any others?" he asked continuing to watch Altra. "Or is this a monotheistic religion?"

Then he grinned and shook his head. "Sorry. Just being curious."

Karal grinned back. "I'm a Sun-priest, so talking about Vkandis Sunlord goes with the robes," he said lightly. "Vkandis is our only god, and until recently suggesting there were other gods would have been the worst sort of heresy."
