Library [3.09]

Opening the library on a Wednesday was a new experience. As was Altra's bristled fur and puffed tail.

Since Karal didn't know what was up with the 'cat, and Altra was disinclined to share, he simply sighed and went to make sure all was in order.

Anyone wanting the library would need to do so without Karal's assistance, as he and Altra had trundled off to class.

Second period saw Karal doing the first thing on his mental list: checking in the books.

Third period saw Karal doing the second thing on the mental list: checking out the new books.

Karal was munching his lunching, with Altra's able assistance. He'd welcome friendly company, despite the library being closed.

Karal was tidying, or at least he was trying to tidy. Altra, over whatever snit he'd been in this morning, was attacking the broom as if he were a moggy doped up on catnip.

Watching the world flip around and around as Altra pounced, wiggled, and wrestled was making Karal seasick.

Altra was lying over most of the desk, grooming. Karal was sitting nearby, enjoying the darkness, because he really didn't want to watch the grooming process up close and personal.

Mmm, 90210 is being acquired as I type. I am both excited and very scared.

After lunch, John stopped by the library. Possibly with the purpose of checking out books, but upon seeing Karal, his goals changed.

"Hey, Karal! Long time no see." Sure it was a bad joke, but it was his, okay?

Karal sighed and Altra rolled his eyes. "Good afternoon, John," he said with a smile, setting aside the broom as Altra pretended he'd never been attacking it, thank you very much. "How are you enjoying your new classes?"

"Haven't fallen asleep yet," John replied, leaning against something just for the sake of leaning. "How 'bout you?"

"I had my first one this morning," he replied. "It was interesting, and I managed not to fall asleep, either." Since this was his first Wednesday in the library, he assumed John wasn't here to see him. "Can I help you find a book, or did you come to enjoy the peace and quiet?"

"Well, I was thinking about a book, but seeing you here reminded me that I've been meaning to talk to you," John said, and hopefully talk would be all he did. "You got a few minutes?"

Karal was surprised, but didn't show it. "Of course," he said. "I always have time if someone needs to talk. Would you like to sit down?"

His survival class would be after lunch. Ender should've been grateful for the fact he was finally enrolled in something useful, but it just seemed to drive home the fact he was contributing absolutely nothing here.

But he'd wanted to go to the library before, and so it dawned on him to do it. He'd have to look into the time period, and the information available. It didn't look as if there was a lot of authorization required here, either.

He was grateful for that, at least; and somewhat so for the presence of a familiar face, too. "Hey."

"Ender, hello," Karal greeted him. "Welcome to the library!"

"You're cheerful," Ender commented, his feet bringing him somewhat closer to Karal. "I'm going to spend some time with the books."

Karal shrugged, smile turning a bit sheepish. "I seem to be this morning," he admitted. "I think I'm just happy to have classes again, and the library is one of my favourite places."

He took all of that in, same as the library. "This is my first time here," he said, "Anything I need to be careful about?" It was, probably, half of a joke.

Karal took it seriously. "Nothing in the library itself, but there's a locked door." He pointed in its direction. "Over there. That's Special Collections, which, well, it has proved to be tricky, and seems to have a mind of its own."

He followed the point of Karal's finger. Interesting. He almost felt curious enough to go near, but he ignored it. "Literally or figuratively?"

He folded his hands, remembering his encounters with Special Collections. "Perhaps not quite a mind, but it feels as it is at least aware."

Definitely curiosity, and so Ender continued fluidly, "Sounds like you've been there before."

"A few times," he admitted with a crooked smile. "I'd be happy to avoid it from now on."

"How bad was it?" He eyed the door, lines and lock and nothing special at all, like the End of the World, and he realised he really wanted to know.

"It--" He stopped, turning the thoughts around in his head, and Altra came to lean against his leg. "I'm not sure how to answer that. Each time, we found what we needed, but it wasn't without cost. I have a personal theory about Special Collections, if you wish to hear it."
