"Ino and Dojima," Cal said, with a wave of his hand, a gesture dismissing them idly. "If I guess right from what Dojima told me, they're having a contest to see who can get the most boys to take off their shirts."

Liir looked singularly unimpressed.

"Good for them."

Cal rolled his eyes a little. "No kidding. As if it's actually a challenge around here. As if the guys needed any more ex--"

The more he said, the more Cal realized that he was sounding again like a certain long hair fourteen year old girl vacationing on the Grand Traverse Bay. So he faltered a little, blinking before finishing, sneering slightly at Calliope's intrusion, "--cuses."

He noticed the pause and the falter, but knowing how little he liked it when other people picked up on his own irritations and musings, he continued.

"I have noticed a good deal of near-nakedness about here for no good reason. That's what I assumed it was today."

"Probably," Cal mused, "a little of column A, a little of column B. Dojima did mention something about a tradition."

"Well, I don't really care, but it's nothing I'll be a part of. Nakedness for it's own sake is a bit pointless."

He shook his head and sighed.

"How have you been? It's been a while since I've spoken to you."

Cal shrugged. "As well as can be expected," he answered, choosing that response specifically for its ambiguity. "You?"

"About the same. I've had good news and bad and seem to have settled onto a reasonable medium."

Cal wondered exactly where he would put his own settling, and it landed somewhere neatly into confused.

"So what's the good news?"

"My father's shown up," he said with a breath out, a peaceful smile, the kind of happiness that was closer to contentment than anything else.

The silence that followed Liir's answer was filled only with a few blinks from Cal as it settled around him. "Oh," he finally managed to say. "That's...cool."

Since he was far from over his own father's death, Cal realized that there was only one direction he'd be willing to take this.

"So," he said. "What's the bad news?"

"I'd rather not discuss it, honestly," he said with a shrug. "It's... somewhat private, between me and someone else, and it just seems wrong to talk about it. Do you understand what I mean?"

He didn't want to offend Cal. It wasn't him. It was just that it was Ino.

Cal shrugged. "Yeah, I get that," he said. He didn't really care what the bad news was, to be entirely honest. He just wanted to get off the topic of fathers as quickly as they had gotten there. He shoved his hands in his pockets for lack of anything else to do with them, shrugging again.

"Any luck around here? Meet anyone interesting?"

"Some German chick," Cal offered, "from Berlin." Something about that, which he couldn't explain, stuck with him. "That's the only new person I've met, though. Everyone else I've talked to, I already know."

"I met Lola too," he admitted. "She seemed pretty nice. Her accent is certainly different from anything I'm familiar with."
