The silence that followed Liir's answer was filled only with a few blinks from Cal as it settled around him. "Oh," he finally managed to say. "That's...cool."

Since he was far from over his own father's death, Cal realized that there was only one direction he'd be willing to take this.

"So," he said. "What's the bad news?"

"I'd rather not discuss it, honestly," he said with a shrug. "It's... somewhat private, between me and someone else, and it just seems wrong to talk about it. Do you understand what I mean?"

He didn't want to offend Cal. It wasn't him. It was just that it was Ino.

Cal shrugged. "Yeah, I get that," he said. He didn't really care what the bad news was, to be entirely honest. He just wanted to get off the topic of fathers as quickly as they had gotten there. He shoved his hands in his pockets for lack of anything else to do with them, shrugging again.

"Some German chick," Cal offered, "from Berlin." Something about that, which he couldn't explain, stuck with him. "That's the only new person I've met, though. Everyone else I've talked to, I already know."

"I met Lola too," he admitted. "She seemed pretty nice. Her accent is certainly different from anything I'm familiar with."
