"Not much," Peyton admitted. "And all the talk about aliens and magic and dimensions. Oh, and I just ran into me two best friends - neither of whom are the ones I left back home."

Claire was nodding along to the aliens, magic, dimensions bit, but the next sentence made no sense. "What?"

"I guess more than one version of a person makes as much sense as a moving island?" she tried. "So, none."

"Yeah," Peyton agreed. "The whole thing is really crazy. But at least it's a different kind of crazy from what I left behind."

"God, I know," Claire agreed. "My life has been either pure drama or mindcrushingly dull this last year."

"Really?" Peyton said curiously. "What went on? Oh, and I'm Peyton, by the way."

"Claire," Claire returned. "Um, my dad got hit by a bus, my oldest brother came home, my mother started dating which is just weird, my other brother came out, and I started seeing this guy who has now decided he wants to be a drug dealer-slash-convict or something. And who embarrassed me in front of our whole school, by the way. " Wow, that was quite the emo dump. "Which is kind of why I'm here. How about you?"

"Wow," Peyton said. "Um, well, I got kind of abandoned by all my friends and then someone wrote 'Dyke' on my locker door and when I protested I got suspended. And then this guy I was in love with had to leave town basically forever, when the mother of his daughter kidnapped her. And then I found out my parents aren't really my parents when my birth mother showed up out of the blue and dumped the whole story on me - plus she's dying of breast cancer which means I get to watch a second mother die and... it just all got to be too much."

"Gabe's friends wrote stuff about my being a toesucker on my car," Claire shared, a little boggled. "But I think you win. At least I'm pretty sure my mom's my mom." Though she made a mental note to call home and check on that one.

"Yeah, well, so I was," Peyton said a little darkly. "Anyway... I'm here now and hopefully it will be easier with a little distance, you know?"

"Patience," she said. "And the key is, take it slowly. I mean, okay, so the welcoming picnic is crazy--but if you want, you can hide out until your first class in your room. I don't advise that though, denial makes it worse I've heard."
