Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

And over here was another section of tables and chairs, still close to the food so no one accidentally starved while trying to avoid the masses.

"Gabe's friends wrote stuff about my being a toesucker on my car," Claire shared, a little boggled. "But I think you win. At least I'm pretty sure my mom's my mom." Though she made a mental note to call home and check on that one.

"Yeah, well, so I was," Peyton said a little darkly. "Anyway... I'm here now and hopefully it will be easier with a little distance, you know?"

"My mom has my same hair," Claire said, lifting a strand as if in proof. "And yeah, distance can't hurt. I'm from L.A., so this is about as far as I can go without a passport." And if David had found a Swiss boarding school, she would have found a way to get one of those.

"I'm from Tree Hill, North Carolina," Peyton said. "I drove down, so not terribly far, but hopefully far enough."

She wasn't very happy to have her car stuck back off the causeway, but it was better than not having it at all. Plus there was the most gorgeous black Impala there to keep it company.

"Lucky. I so wanted to drive, but my mom freaked out completely at the idea. Old car, long trip, blah blah blah," Claire said. "My brother says he'll bring it out at Christmas if I still want it."

She hadn't heard of Tree Hill, but she wasn't sure she could find North Carolina on a map without prompting.

"Well, my mom's dead and my dad's away for the next God knows how many months on a dredging job," Peyton explained. "Plus I'm pretty much on my own anyway."

Claire would have been much more jealous of that if it didn't sound like it bothered Peyton so much. "Do you have huge parties all the time?" she asked, trying to lighten things just slightly.

"Me?" Peyton looked startled, then laughed. "No. Never. Not at my house. My ex-boyfriend's family has a huge house on the beach, so we usually have them there or right on the beach. Or, well... at the nightclub I sort of help manage - or at least book bands for on the All Ages nights."

"Nice job," Claire approved, impressed. "What kind of music do you like?"

Peyton laughed again. "You should see the collection of records I brought just for here. Anything really. Punk mostly, though at the moment I'm kind of into early 80's heavy metal stuff."

"Like Motley Crue?" Claire asked with a laugh. "My brother Nate -- he's 18 years older -- was, like, an expert on all of that. Even though he'd totally lie and say he wasn't."

She gave a small smile. "I like punk and indie too. And I'm getting into jazz."

"They're not bad," Peyton said. "And hey, I can totally lend you some stuff you'd probably like. The CDs. I don't lend the vinyl to anyone."

"What dorm room are you in?" Claire asked. "Maybe I could stop by sometime to trade CDs and stuff."

"I'm in 332," she added.

"I'm in 319, so it shouldn't be that hard to find," Peyton said with a grin.

"I don't even have to try to use the stairs," Claire laughed. "I'll see you later, Peyton."

Wow. That was at least one person she didn't hate.
