Living On Your Own, Friday, Period 1

Tyler stood leaning against the front wall of the classroom as the students filed in and, once everyone seemed to be settled, he began.

"Hey. Happy Friday. Hope no one still has a speech impediment from talkin' like a pirate yesterday."

"Today we're talking about getting a job, which you will most likely need if you wanna live on your own unless you happen to have a couple extra thousand bucks lying around. (If you do, congratulations and don't forget to share the wealth.) The estimate I found online was that for an average adult in Alexandria, where the school is when it's not on a world tour, you need to earn almost $25,000 a year. That's not steak and new Prius money. That's cheap apartment, rice and beans, riding the bus money."

"The kind of job you're probably going to get starting out is not all that glamorous. Without qualifications, you can work retail, you can wait tables, you can do factory work -- which is kind of fun 'cause you get to be around big dangerous machinery. And, of course, not many of those jobs hit the $12 an hour you'd want."

"An easy way to get more money, and make your life a little more interesting, is to work night jobs. Yeah, you get on a vampire's schedule but the people are more interesting, you don't have to get out of bed at 6 a.m., and half the time they'll hire any warm body. That's how I ended up being a banquet waiter when I was first on my own."

"To find a job, first thing you wanna do is look at the want ads. Remember that there are a lot of scams out there, model usually means hooker, and you shouldn't have to pay anybody to get a job. Once you find something that you can do, you need to send in a resume or application." He reviewed how to write a resume or fill out an application. "And then you send it off and, most of the time, never hear back. But when you do hear back, that's the interview. My big tips for that are don't freak out, wear nice clothes, and smile and seem upbeat even if it makes you feel like a crazy person. Employers like the happy."

"Your assignment today is to find a job you think you'd be qualified for as of today and write an application for it, using this sample application. And if you have extra time, I will be happy to interview you for the jobs you applied for."

"Next week is cooking, so start thinking about food."

You've sent the application in, and you get a call from hiring manager Mr. Durden. Try to impress him.

Tyler called Michael. "Hey, it's Tyler over at the sports bar where you applied. Looks like you have a lot of restaurant experience."

"Hi", he said with a grin. "Yeah, I can make up drinks with the best of 'em. And cook."

Tyler leaned back in his chair, eying the kid. "You look kind of young, do you have a bartending license? Last thing I need is the liquor board on my ass."

Gavin picked up the phone and said, "Hello, sir, thank you very much for your consideration."

He figured he could start off on the right foot.

"Thanks for applying," Tyler responded. "Not a lot of camp counselors are still looking for work. So do you like kids, Mr. Darklighter?"

"Very much," Gavin said. He left out the part that he had one...kind of. "They're about the only people who have more energy than I do."

"This is definitely a high energy job," Tyler noted approvingly. "So it's sports camp, did you play anything in school, YMCA, anything like that?"

"It wasn't organized like that," Gavin explained, "but me and friends of mine used to play a form of football in Beggar's Canyon. That's a place where I'm from. It was the desert so we had to make up games since there wasn't a lot of establishments to actually play games and sports at."

She would certainly try to impress Mr. Durden, and it helped that she had a bit of experience in the job she applied for.

"Fast way to earn money and I've had some experience in the make-up department," she answered.

"I used to work in a morgue, making the dead look decent," she answered far too easily.

Ino was confident enough in her ability to do this job and would totally do her best to impress him.

Tyler gave her a dubious look. "Hi, Ino, so why do you think you're the best choice for a floral associate?"

"Because I have years of experience in the industry," Ino said promptly. "And I'm energetic and cheerful."

Tyler read over her application. "Okay, and do you have any special skills you've gained from your experience?"

"Designing arrangements," she said, with a nod. "Anything someone wants to express in words, I can put together the right flowers to compliment that. From the very easy 'I love you' to the 'I cannot believe you did that, and I'm totally getting revenge on you.'"

A pause.

"And growing flowers. I haven't found anything yet that I can't take care of and have it flourish."

And, look at that, thanks to Cal's usual style, he was even a little dressed up. He just straightened his jacket, ran a hand through his hair, and drew in a deep breath. He wouldn't exactly say he was going to try impress, but he certainly wouldn't go out of his way to do bad, either.

"Hello, I'm here for the interview?"

Which was weird. He'd held two jobs, but never once interviewed. He usually just sort of fell into them.

"I haven't any," Cal admitted, shrugging a bit, "but the ad said it wasn't necessary. I'd like to learn, though."
