Tyler stood leaning against the front wall of the classroom as the students filed in and, once everyone seemed to be settled, he began.

"Hey. Happy Friday. Hope no one still has a speech impediment from talkin' like a pirate yesterday."

"Today we're talking about getting a job, which you will most likely need if you wanna live on your own unless you happen to have a couple extra thousand bucks lying around. (If you do, congratulations and don't forget to share the wealth.) The estimate I found online was that for an average adult in Alexandria, where the school is when it's not on a world tour, you need to earn almost $25,000 a year. That's not steak and new Prius money. That's cheap apartment, rice and beans, riding the bus money."

"The kind of job you're probably going to get starting out is not all that glamorous. Without qualifications, you can work retail, you can wait tables, you can do factory work -- which is kind of fun 'cause you get to be around big dangerous machinery. And, of course, not many of those jobs hit the $12 an hour you'd want."

"An easy way to get more money, and make your life a little more interesting, is to work night jobs. Yeah, you get on a vampire's schedule but the people are more interesting, you don't have to get out of bed at 6 a.m., and half the time they'll hire any warm body. That's how I ended up being a banquet waiter when I was first on my own."

"To find a job, first thing you wanna do is look at the want ads. Remember that there are a lot of scams out there, model usually means hooker, and you shouldn't have to pay anybody to get a job. Once you find something that you can do, you need to send in a resume or application." He reviewed how to write a resume or fill out an application. "And then you send it off and, most of the time, never hear back. But when you do hear back, that's the interview. My big tips for that are don't freak out, wear nice clothes, and smile and seem upbeat even if it makes you feel like a crazy person. Employers like the happy."

"Your assignment today is to find a job you think you'd be qualified for as of today and write an application for it, using this sample application. And if you have extra time, I will be happy to interview you for the jobs you applied for."

"Next week is cooking, so start thinking about food."

Tyler read over her application. "Okay, and do you have any special skills you've gained from your experience?"

"Designing arrangements," she said, with a nod. "Anything someone wants to express in words, I can put together the right flowers to compliment that. From the very easy 'I love you' to the 'I cannot believe you did that, and I'm totally getting revenge on you.'"

A pause.

"And growing flowers. I haven't found anything yet that I can't take care of and have it flourish."

Tyler had to ask something out of personal curiosity. "What would you do if someone wanted to say, 'I loved you but you slept with my best friend, drop dead, unless you're interested in a threesome'?"

Ino grinned at that. "Well, see, that totally depends on how they want it. I’d definitely suggest the use of lotus flowers, marigolds, snapdragons, petunias, white violets, and two sticky catchfly flowers tied together with a ribbon in the center of the bouquet. That’s a complicated one, so it would depend on how much they wanted getting the message across over the appearance of the bouquet. You could cut out the petunias and the snapdragons fairly easily, and still say about the same thing. They just serve as further emphasis in making sure that how upset you are comes across."

"But you don't want it to be too busy," Tyler mused, not having any idea what half those flowers looked like but pleased she had a response. "I think we can lose a little emphasis and drop the petunias."

"Did you have any questions about the job for me?"

Of course she'd have a response. Her dad would be totally disappointed if she didn't. "That's totally easy enough," Ino agreed. "They just mean anger, and the marigolds cover that as well."

A beat.

"And I was wondering what your benefits package? Can I have more details about that? And what would my hours be like? I know you close at seven during the week, but what shift are you hiring for?"

Tyler ~~handwavily~~ detailed a standard benefits package with health insurance, two weeks of leave per year, and paid parking or public transportation.

"We like our associates to work four ten-hour shifts, so you'd be in the store Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 9:30 to 7:30, with the other three days off. Of course we might shift you around if our needs change."

Ino nodded. "That definitely sounds reasonable to me. And your pay rates?"

"You have experience, so we can start you at $9 an hour," Tyler said, lowballing on purpose.

Ino raised her eyebrows. "I bet I could find another store that'd pay more for me, you know."

"But with health insurance?" Tyler countered. "Okay, $10.50."

Ino considered that. "With a possibility of a raise in six months or so?"

It was a fake job and fake money, so ... "Sure, based on performance," Tyler said. "Are you saying you would take the job?"

"I definitely would," Ino said, smiling. "And you won't have any issues with my performance."

"Sounds great, you can start next Wednesday," Tyler told her. "Work on some bouquet ideas in the meantime."

"You've got it! Thanks so much!"
