Karaoke For Fun And Profit #3 [Monday, Period 4, 7/14]

Mike was feeling a bit nostalgic today, so he reset the Danger Room simulation to the familiar Club Mystique at the original Montecito casino, as it had looked during the Las Vegas Centennial. "A few years ago, my aunt Gladys Knight performed in Las Vegas to celebrate the city's 100th birthday, and I had the honor of being a member of her back-up group," said Mike. "Now, I couldn't get Aunt Gladys out here today, but I thought we'd talk about a musical genre that is near and dear to my heart: R&B. Like most major music genres, you'll get different sub-sets such as contemporary R&B, soul, funk, and even reggae." As he spoke, Mike passed out a few song catalogs for the students to look through.

"As karaoke singers, the type of R&B songs you'll hear most often are either the Motown classics, which includes hits from the '50s and '60s, or contemporary, which includes R&B hits after the end of the disco era. Today, your task is to perform a song from somewhere in the R&B spectrum. As for myself, I'm going to do one my favorite Gladys Knight song, 'You're The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me.'"

Turtle preened a little at the compliment, clapping her hands, too, because this class just made her want to applause and use this icon a lot. "Thanks, Amber! Yours was really good too!"

"Thank you," Amber beamed.

Hopping down from the stage, Turtle moved over to take a seat next to Amber, so she could make an easier time out of goading her a little with an playful elbow to the ribs. "So, you have anyone in mind when you were singing yours, eh? Eh?"

She figured it wouldn't hurt to catch up a little bit with her only female (and, therefor, her favorite by default) employee.

Scrunching up her shoulder, she grinned at the playful elbow to her ribs. "Nooooo," she sing-songed. "Not yet at least and before you ask, I'm not really lookin' either." Her expression turned slightly shifty. "Some people? They just don't date."

Re: Stage [WS3]

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 12:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah," Turtle said with a sigh. "I was like that for a while. When I was, like, fourteen." Which was, clearly, ages ago. "And you're older than me, right? So why don't you date?"

She figured, however, that she'd much rather see Amber not date than go the other way and date too much. She was blonde, after all. It seemed to be easy for blondes to go across that line.

Amber raised a brow, her grin cute. "I never said I don't date, Turtle."

Re: Stage [WS3]

Turtle's head tilted. "Oh," she said after a moment, blinking. "When you said 'some people don't date,' I just figured you were talking about yourself."

There was another pause, and then a smirk broke out on Turtle's face.

"So there is someone, it's just he doesn't date, right?"

Re: Stage [WS3]

[identity profile] minnesota-teen.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 12:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"I know," she said, feeling proud of herself for that. What? Amber could be sneaky like that.

Looking back to the stage, she pursed her lips a bit. "...I don't know, honestly. I could like someone, very easily. Actually, I could like someone else too but... nahhh, one just doesn't date, doesn't even think about me in that way, and the other? I enjoyed a whole day with him yesterday that's still being played out la."

Re: Stage [WS3]

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 12:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"So, see? Clearly, the first one's just going to be a waste of time," Turtle said, waving her hand dismissively at whoever this boy was; she would start trying to figure out who it was, but she didn't have enough information yet. "Especially if the other one's working out okay, you know?"

Look at her, giving relationship advice to an older girl. Turtle felt important. But, then again, she and Jeff had been together for almost a year now, so, clearly, it was totally acceptable for Turtle to feel a bit like an expert in these matters.

Amber nodded, once, clearly thinking about Cal. Not that Turtle knew that and not that Amber would confess or give up names, but she was thinking about him and offered Turtle her agreement. "You're right. He doesn't date, won't ever date; not that I really understand why. Honestly I think it's me, but who knows. And no," she said about the other. "I don't know if you could call it workin' out. I mean, he's... yah, no, I'm not thought of like that either, with him. It's... no, I just don't think so..." At least this was her opinion.

"I did go on this pool date with this totally hot guy week before last. Hannibal is his name. Totally hot. But I think he's a player."

Re: Stage [WS3]

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 01:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, man. Amber was kind of getting around after all, by the sounds of it. Maybe she couldn't help it, with the whole blonde thing, which was a shame, because she liked Amber. Turtle made a small, thoughtful sound. "Well," she reasoned, "you could try another date with this Hannibal guy," she tried to remember if anything she'd reported on him seemed player-ish, but she couldn't remember. "Or, I mean, try that out, and maybe that other guy might come around and start dating. 'Cause I didn't used to date, and then I tried it, and, what do you know, now I've been with the same guy for almost a year and we're even sharing a room. So who knows? I mean, sometimes you have to take the initiative, 'cause my first year? There was this one guy? And we liked each other, it was so obvious, but neither of us had the balls enough to ask the other out and then he went off to some internship and that was the end of that. But with Jeff, well....Jeff couldn't ask out a paper bag. I had to do it if I wanted anything, and I did, and ta-dah! Relationship."

"I did ask him out, in a way, Turtle. He told me no. He doesn't date. Not sure how much he might come around after that, but I'm not thinkin' much. He was pretty... determined."

Amber sighed, though she gave Turtle a genuine smile. "Good for you. I'd like to meet this Jeff, I don't think I ever have. Sharin' a room though, wow, that's some pretty serious stuff."

Re: Stage [WS3]

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Turtle's mouth twisted a little in a sort of unadmitted defeat, then. She guessed she couldn't do anything about it if the guy'd right out said no, but at least that gave her a few hints toward figuring out who he was. He'd have to be really weird, because what kind of guy would just flat out say no?

Instead, though, she focused on the rest, breaking out into a small smile. "I know, right?" she said. "I have no idea what I'm going to do when it comes around to my parents that we're doing this. My dad'll flip."

Re: Stage [WS3]

[identity profile] minnesota-teen.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Amber would like to know that very thing. It's why she more or less figured it was her. He wasn't immune after all, he did gawk at Inara's chest when Amber was enjoying her body. Cal had never gawked at Amber. The only person that she'd even consider doing such, was Brett, and yeah, Brett's six feet under, bless his heart.

"My ma would too. She'd probably wring my neck good, then find the boy and cut off his privates with her hooked-hand."

Re: Stage [WS3]

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 01:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yup," Turtle said with a defeatist nod. "That's my dad, alright. Well, except the hooked-hand, but he is a podiatrist, so he's got all sorts of tools for that sort of thing. Of course, I don't tell Jeff this; if he heard any of that, he'd never come out from hiding under his bed or something, which is weird. You'd think he'd be used to it because his mom threatens him with that sort of thing all the bloody time."

There was a slight pause, considering her words, especially the fact that she'd said 'bloody,' which was definitely a clear sign that she'd been taking a British guy for too long.

"...His mother is insane, by the way. I've met her. She called me a slut."

Re: Stage [WS3]

[identity profile] minnesota-teen.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"Does he... hide alot, your Jeff?" asked Amber, wondering about this boyfriend of Turtle's.

The 'bloody' was noted though Amber didn't comment; people spoke oddly at times and she was no one to point fingers. Besides, she knew it was a british curse word. Or something like it.

Amber gasped. "A slut? To your face? What did you do?"

Re: Stage [WS3]

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, yeah," Turtle said, nodding enthusiastically with a roll of her eyes on both accounts. "If there was a world-wide competition for hiding, Jeff would be the undisputed champion. And, yup, right to my face, as well as a bunch of other things that I'm too much of a lady to say, but I just yelled right back at her because she was making claims without any proof. I told her to prove it, and she couldn't, so I won, even though she might tell you otherwise, but I doubt it, because she'd be too busy calling you a harlot, too."

Re: Stage [WS3]

[identity profile] minnesota-teen.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Amber cringed. "Poor Jeff. Poor you. I hope you never have to see that woman again anytime soon. I don't know how well I would be able to hold my temper if I were called a harlot. At least you yelled right back."

Re: Stage [WS3]

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"And I even managed to hold back the urge to kick her," Turtle added, nodding with great pride.

Re: Stage [WS3]

[identity profile] minnesota-teen.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"More will power than I," Amber mused. Actually, Amber wouldn't kick anyone but she's sure smack them around.

Re: Stage [WS3]

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Turtle shrugged. "She's in England, so I don't have to deal with her so much, so there's at least that."

Re: Stage [WS3]

[identity profile] minnesota-teen.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"Lucky for you," she said.

"So you and Jeff been goin' out a while, uh?"

Re: Stage [WS3]

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Turtle nodded. "Yup, about a year now. It was last summer that I asked him out, I mean, like to be a couple and everything. It's kind of funny, we only met because I'd made a joke about being a supermodel on radio, and he actually thought it was true. Boy, was he surprised when he came into Turtle & Canary and got me, instead, but, somehow, that built into us going on a date, and then going on a date lead to me really starting to like him...Go figure."

Re: Stage [WS3]

[identity profile] minnesota-teen.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Amber smiled. "That's so cute! He only came after you because he thought you were a model? What a guys way to think, god. But you must have done somethin' right to capture his heart, yah? I'm a little envious of that."

Re: Stage [WS3]

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Turtle's head tilted a little at that, thoughtfully, her forehead wrinkled as she considered this. Amber probably had a lot more of a point than she realized, although Turtle didn't realize that her perspective on it was much different from Jeff's. Jeff and his obsession with boobs (which she didn't have) and more supermodel types, but he still seemed to think that his absolutely and utterly average girlfriend was something stunning and fascinating. She shook her head a little.

"...I'm definitely really lucky to have him," she said. "But I think it goes both ways, because Jeff's really different, but that's what I like about him."
