The Library [11.07]

It was with a deep sigh of relief that Karal arrived at the libray and found no one else there. There didn't seem to be any sign of a librarian, either, so...

"Shall we?" he asked Altra. The Firecat nodded and led the way inside, Karal following closely at his heels.

Karal was sitting at the desk - and Altra was sitting on it - refamiliarising himself with everything.

Hopefully, he wouldn't mind an interruption.

"...Karal?"

There was a shuffle of paperbag from the door to the library.

"Good morning, Liir," he called as Altra looked up. "Are you all right?"

"Just fine. I brought lunch (http://community.livejournal.com/food_porn/4714998.html#cutid1) for you and Altra, that's all."

He walked in and put the bag down on the counter.

"Though if you'd rather I didn't so you could get some practice in the kitchen, I could take it away."

A touch of teasing.

He smiled while Altra looked curiously at the bag. "I think I've exercised my cooking skills enough today," he said. "I made toast. Thank you, Liir."

The first thing that came out of the bag was the little bowl with strictly meat which was for Altra. He put that on the counter.

The rest he left in the bag for whenever Karal was hungry.

"You're welcome. I didn't want to take up too much of your time. I just figured I'd keep up tradition. I'm sure you have some work you have to do in here, settling in again."

"Thank you, Liir. For the lunch and for continuing the tradition. It's very good to see you this morning," he said. "And I'm just so happy to be back in the library. I was afraid they might have assigned it to someone else. I missed it."

"I'm sure it's missed you as well," he said with a hand to the counter. He wasn't listening, but that didn't mean it wasn't there. Libraries were insistent. Any collection of stories was, especially when they'd been read.

"I'll make sure to continue then."

He leaned against the wood.

"How have you been otherwise?"

"I've been well, on the whole." He folded his hands on the counter, leaning forward a little bit. "Everything is so simple here. I know, I know it isn't really, but compared to where I was before, it feels simple. Peaceful. As if there is nothing but time."

"No, I agree with you," he said. "Even the oddness is... well, it's terrifying when it happens, but there's always something. You know?"

"I know." He let out a small sigh of contentment. "And I know something will happen soon enough to interrupt the peace, but I'm going to enjoy it just as much as I can while it lasts." He shook his head at himself. "But how are you today, Liir?"

"Well. I got in some cooking last night, hence food this morning, as well as a bit of baking. Work on Ino's broom is going extremely well to the point where I think I might have a prototype for her to try out. And I've spoken to at least four people this week so she won't yell at me."

The last was said with a faint smirk.

"My professors have been interesting as well."

Even the 'being a bitch' class.

Karal laughed. "Ino not yelling at you would be a very good thing! I must go and see her; she was very kind to me before I left." He tilted his head. "Is interesting good or bad?"

"They certainly have something to teach me," he said with a brief grin. "And I'll take any lesson. You know how I feel about that.

"How have your classes been?"

"Explosives was...not as scary as I thought it was going to be. I think I might even enjoy it," he said thoughtfully. "And I haven't had my other one yet. It's this afternoon, and I have no idea what to expect from something called Roving the Galaxy."

"If it's with the Doctor, probably a lot of running around and trying not to die."

He smiled, though it was in his voice as well.

"Well, as much as you try not to die in the Danger Shop."

"It is, yes," he said, considering that. "Well, not dying is a very good thing, and running around is always useful. It sounds as if it will be an interesting class."

"I somehow landed in a class on how to become a quote unquote bitch," he said with a faint smile. "I didn't mean to and I don't think I'll need the help but it will at least give me good examples of what not to do, I suppose."

"There's a class on that?" Karal almost squeaked. "Glory, just when I think nothing on the island could surprise me anymore."

"Being taught by Professor Beaubier and Miss Bell," he told him.

"...they called me 'Larry'."

Karal made a face. "They sound as bad as Professor Stinson."

He shook his head.

"I liked Professor Beaubier's math class," he told Karal. "And Miss Bell helped me find new clothing to wear when I got here. I had to pay for it, of course, but she helped me pick things so I wouldn't look insane."

"Well," he said, considering that, "perhaps they're just very bad at names? Or think it will be easier for you to be a, a bitch if you are pretending to be someone else?"

"My mother was probably one of the best examples to set foot on packed earth," he said with a brief grin. "That might work best. And keep the ideas of behavior firmly away from me."

Karal nodded. "I agree," he said seriously. "Good to know the signs so you know what to avoid, but keep it separate from yourself."
