Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

Yes, there were more tables and chairs here. No, they were not allowed to be used for making a bonfire. Eat something hot if you're still weirdly cold.

"It's, like... you know? I totally get that he was pissed at me? Both as a kitty though he's totally pretending to be in denial of the whole... kitty thing now, and all, right? And I've got no problems if he wants to take it out on me, but my plants are, you know, living things in their own right and totally don't deserve to be smashed. It'd be... like... kicking someone's puppy 'cause you were mad at them."

Ino, yeah, was never going to get along with Worf. Ever.

"Hey, I agree with you there," Cal said, nodding a little. He then shrugged a shoulder. "I could talk to him, you know, if you'd like. We get along pretty well."

...Somehow. But he liked Worf, and Worf seemed to tolerate him better than he tolerated most...um, civilians.

"I'd like it if you tried?" Ino said, smiling a bit. "Though I bet he'll say something about me lacking honour and such. Worf caught me sleeping once, at work, and was really pissed about it. I don't see why it matters, I mean, Cable-san's the boss and he just put a blanket over me so I wouldn't get cold, so it wasn't like he cared..."

...Aww. That was cute. Cal grinned a little before shrugging a little.

"Worf's just...kind of special. But, yeah, I'll mention something to him for you."

Cal couldn't help but wonder a little, though: what was with so many of his friends disliking Ino? Granted, it was only two people, but Cal didn't really have that many friends over all.

Ino, for her part, if she knew what he was thinking, would say that Worf had totally started it, and that she'd just be rather confused about Amber. But, as Ino didn't actually know that...

"Thanks, Cal. I appreciate it. I don't even mind the honour stuff, you know?" she said. "But... at least in that case it didn't matter because Cable-san didn't care. And then he, when I argued with him, he said 'you humans are all alike' and I got, erm, madder at him because that's not a very nice thing to say."

Cal winced a little at that. But this was good, that he was learning about this. He wasn't going to tell Ino about it because he wasn't sure if Worf wanted it kept quiet, but if he was supposed to be helping the guy fit in, things like this were important to know.

"Yeah, he's...coming from a completely different angle at things than we are, but I know he probably doesn't mean to be so brash. It's just what he's used to."

"I guess?" she said, tugging at her hair. "But it makes it hard to like him, and I like most people here. And, really, it's like... the first thing you learn here--don't insult people based on species, you know?"

Cal shrugged a little. "You can't really expect to like everyone, you know. I'm not saying he's right, of course, I'm just saying. Not everyone's going to be easily won over."

Ino looked amused.

"I tend to win in the end," she pointed out. "I mean, a new guy told me he already hated me today, and I'm totally going to stalk him 'til he changes his mind. He seemed to mind a lot less, you know, once I told him he was cute."

Cal arched an eyebrow, frowning at that. He tried to think of something to say, but discovered himself to be at a loss. He didn't exactly know why so much of what Ino said bothered him, but it did.

Was she just really that completely ignorant to the concepts of personal space and respect for another person's wishes?

Then again, it wasn't like he hadn't butted horns with Ino before, and it wasn't like he didn't expect it to happen again.

"Why?"

"Why what?" She blinked at him.

"Why dedicate yourself to just drilling and drilling into someone until they begrudgingly see things your way? That may work with some people, Ino, but not everyone's going to like that."

Present company included.

"Well," she considered that. "If he really wanted me to go away, then he would've stopped talking to me. I can take a hint after all, but he did keep talking to me, so even though he says he hates me, I think he's just really bad at the social thing."

She could so totally take a hint. Ino hadn't breathed one word of dancing to Cal while on the cruise ship.

"Yeah, you can take a hint after it's been bludgeoned into your head about fifty million times," Cal muttered. "And maybe he just thought it would be rude to just stop talking to you. I mean, come on. I had to practically refuse to have anything to do with you to get you to drop the dancing thing and how many times did Worf scratch and bite you? When he stuck as a kitten, no less, barely a position to really voice his objection."

Not that she'd listen to it even if he could.

Okay, now Ino was looking cross.

"He told me he hated me after I said hi. You can't hate someone just for saying hello," she tugged, rather viciously at her bangs. "I can't help the way I am."

"Probably not really," Cal agreed on that point, "but something tells me that if he said that, bothering the shit out of him isn't going to make him like you any more. Unless, of course, apparently, if you call him hot, in which case, I wonder why you're so interested in being friends with someone that petty. Just to make a friend for the sake of claiming a friend? Just to prove you're right? What's so bad about being wrong every once in a while?"

Ino took a deep breath.

"I hate being wrong." More than anything almost.

Really? He hadn't noticed. So he just proposed his question again.

"Why?"

He gave it a moment's pause before adding, "Don't have to answer. It's rhetorical. Just something to think about."

Even if he did wonder how much of it had to do with a drive to perfection. And if Ino thought she had to be perfect, did she expect perfection in those she associated with? If that was the case, he was screwed, and Ino was setting herself up for a whole lifetime of disappointment, really.

She laughed, though it wasn't funny.

"You think I haven't thought 'bout it before? Seriously? I know I'm not the most introspective person ever, but I do know myself that well at least. I know why, Cal. And it's not going to just... go away."

"And shoving it down people's throats is helping any more?"

Or maybe that was just it. Ino needed people that, when she shoved, got pushed. And maybe Cal had spent too much of his life being one of those people.

That got a shrug, a jerky sort of uncomfortable shrug.

"If I'm wrong," she said, finally. "Then I'm useless. Okay? Happy now? I know it's messed up, whatever."

"I said you didn't have to answer," Cal reminded her, frowning slightly, because he did. So why was she? She didn't need to tell him any of this stuff.

"And, you know that if you're right, then someone else is wrong, right? So does that mean anyone who's wrong is useless?"

Because he'd asked. Because he wasn't like Liir who'd bend over backwards to try and make things right when there wasn't anything to make right and it was just the way her head worked.

"No," she said, looking frustrated. "I just can't be wrong. That's all. It doesn't matter if anyone else is wrong. They're still useful, whatever."

"But, if you're wrong, you're not," Cal repeated with a nod.

"Well. That makes sense."

"You're laughing at me," she said, looking away. "But I can't help it."
