Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

Yes, there were more tables and chairs here. No, they were not allowed to be used for making a bonfire. Eat something hot if you're still weirdly cold.

The fact that she'd been expected here was still unnerving Agnes.

Before she'd become a witch, she would probably have hid in the corner and not talked to anyone. Now that she was one, there were standards to uphold. So, she straightened her pointy black hat, made sure she looked like she darn well knew where she was and what she was doing, and settled herself a little ways back from the crowds, watching and observing. Which, of course, wasn't the same thing AT ALL.

"That's a very nice hat," Giselle informed the new girl.

That... wasn't at ALL any of the reactions her hat was supposed to get.

"Thank you," Agnes replied sweetly. "It was a gift."

"Oh how nice!" Giselle exclaimed. "A good friend?"

She was like Christine all over again, and Agnes was completely floored by there being two such people in the universe.

"Not really," she answered, thinking of Granny and Nanny. "It was more of a beginning-of-an-apprenticeship sort of thing."

"But still," Giselle said. "A gift! Do you have other colours too?"

"No, the black is sort of..." Well, "required" wasn't really the right word, was it? Especially since Magrat never wore black, or even the hat. It was more that it was sort of... "traditional. And sensible. You can't go wrong with your basic black."

"But what fun is being sensible?" Giselle asked. "I could make you one in a pretty blue! Oh! Or maybe a purple? That would look so lovely with your complexion."

The cheerfulness was infectious, and Agnes could already feel it starting to affect her. She's too cheerful, countered Perdita. I'll bet birds and small furry animals flock to her side when she sings.

"No, it's... The whole point of the pointy black hat is for it to be black. And pointy. It's a witch's hat, you see. A pretty blue wouldn't quite have the same effect."

"Isn't this exciting?" Viki said, blinking at the hat.

"Well," Agnes answered, "it's definitely... interesting, that's for sure."

Exciting would have to wait until she figured out what the fudge was going on.

"Everyone's been very nice," she said, with a tilt of her head. "And I've never really gone to school before, so it should be a lot of fun, I think. What do you think?"

"I've never gone to school before, either," Agnes answered warily, "so I'm not sure WHAT to expect. We'll see." Hurriedly, she added, "...but I'm sure it'll be a LOT of fun, really." No sense in ruining the nice girl's mood.

It would, really, take a fair bit to ruin Viki's mood.

"It's very odd that they knew I was coming though," Viki mused. "When I didn't even know myself until I was here and a nice man gave me a coffee."

"Yeah, I wonder how they did that..." Agnes replied. "I showed up pretty unexpectedly, myself, but I was still... expected." Really, that could have been phrased better. "They must have powerful wizards here."

"Wouldn't it be fun to meet them?" Viki asked brightly. "And, I don't remembering saying but I'm Viki."

"...Fun," Agnes answered. "Right. I suppose it must be." She'd heard some of Granny Weatherwax's opinion of wizards, and wasn't all that sure she'd like to meet one right about now.

"I'm Agnes. Agnes Nitt. It's a pleasure to meet you."

"Do you wear that hat often?" Alice asked.

She never had learned how to properly start a conversation.

So, apparently, the world she'd taken herself to wasn't one where witches were common, seeing as how no one reacted to the hat in a normal sort of way.

"Uh... Yeah. Yes, I do," Agnes confirmed. "At least, recently I do."

"It's certainly dramatic," Alice nodded. "Is that why you wear it? I knew a man who had a large hat with alchemical symbols on it. I always thought I'd like to borrow his."

Well, that was insightful. "...Actually, yes," Agnes answered. It's a witch's hat -- it's supposed to command attention and respect." And make me look taller. Personally, Agnes didn't think the hat did much more than make her look silly, but there was the principle of the thing.

"Oh, I do beg your pardon," Alice said, dropping Agnes a very proper sort of curtsy. "I had no idea. What sort of respect is granted a witch, then?"

She was always eager to learn these things.

A heck of a lot more than I normally get, Agnes thought. "Oh, you know. Just... Respect, in general. We're full of wisdom, and magic spells, and..." She thought for a moment, grasping for something else to add. "...And suchlike." In full candor, she added, "At least, we are once we've learned all that."

"I haven't any magic abilities," she said. "Are they very difficult to learn? Or is this an innate sort of power? I hope you don't mind the questions, I've never met a witch before."

Considering Fandom, she likely had, she just didn't realize it.

"It's... sort of a bit of both?" Agnes replied. "You have to have the innate power to begin with, but it won't come to anything unless you also learn how to use it."

She squinted at Alice, trying to... see her aura, or feel her vibrations, or whatever it was that Granny and Nanny had done to single her out from the crowd.
