That earned something of a snort.

"You sit down at my table just to roll your eyes at me?"

"I can sit wherever I choose," she said haughtily. "And why do you think I sat here?"

"I can roll my eyes for as long as you want to sit here," Warren replied, because this was clearly some sort of challenge.

"Why, please, by all means," she said, settling in for a good long stare. "I could do with the entertainment."

"Carry on," she said waving her hand at him.

Yes, she knew she was being rude, but really, who did he think he was?

Warren tilted his head slightly for further consideration.

"Not really a people-person, are you?"

If her answer was no, then she could stay, he decided.

She snorted. "Only if they're not fools. Which most of them are."

"They are," Warren agreed.

Very well. She could stay.

"I'm Warren. New here, too?"

"Unfortunately, yes. To both things." She sighed. "I am Helen."

"And about as thrilled to be here as I am," Warren noted. "At least everyone here isn't... clingy."

Over-friendly, actually, was a better phrase for it.

"I did not want to come," Helen agreed. "Can you believe the priests threatened to stone me and exile me again if I did not come?"

"Everyone is too... cheerful."

"They agreed not to exile you so long as you went away?"

Somehow, Warren found that notion to be somewhat amusing. And, really, not at all surprising.

"I just hope the cheerfulness isn't contagious."

Warren was pretty certain that he had built up immunity. Pretty certain.

Helen was not amused and it definitely showed in her face. "They agreed not to exile me permanently if I went away to school."

"And I can be cheerful. I just don't choose to be at the moment."

"Whichever," Warren replied with a small shrug of his shoulders. "I've had pleasant moments, too. But now seems to be a good time not to be."

Just in case people started to get ideas early-on that he was at all approachable, or something absurd like that.

"So how did you end up here?" she asked, staring out at all of the happy people.

[personal profile] peace_n_war 2008-07-06 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
There were way too many happy people out there. There just were.

"My mother figured that my last school had too many bad influences, so she figured she'd send me here hoping that it was a healthier environment," Warren replied with a clear eyeroll. "Or something."

Warren had his reasons to think that his mother's judgment was suspect.

[identity profile] elephantgadget.livejournal.com 2008-07-06 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not that Helen necessarily minded happy people. She just wasn't used to not being able to avoid them if she was unhappy. Or, in the case of the priests, get them to avoid her. And today she was definitely unhappy.

"Too many negative people there, affecting your sunny mood?" Helen said with an only slightly smug grin. And yeah, it was mostly a joke. She knew she was being bitchy, but she also figured he could take it - and maybe even appreciate it.

Warren's eyebrow twitched upward, but then, so did the corners of his lips, slightly.

"Something like that," he agreed. "I don't think it's going to make much of a difference, anyhow. High school is high school no matter where you go."

"My last school saw more than a few changes before the end of last year," he replied. "But if this school is anything like it, expect weird classes, insane teachers, and a student or two bent on taking over the world with their grand criminal schemes."

A pause.

"That's just how high school works," he explained.

Helen rolled her eyes. "Wonderful. I already had to save all the worlds once."

She sighed. "Well, as long as there aren't cannibals."

"I'm pretty sure there aren't cannibals," Warren assured her. Saving the world (or, all of them, as her case might be) just didn't seem to be a terrible stretch. "Though there are always students who speculate about the cafeteria food. I'm pretty sure it's safe, anyhow."

She let out a sigh. "Maybe it wo't be completely terrible."

"I mean, at least I can always have glare-offs with you." She managed another small smile for him.

"Oh, it'll find a way to be completely terrible," Warren replied, and yes, that was a smirk on his lips, now. "Giving you dirty looks all term is probably going to be a highlight, I'm sure."

"Maybe we'll end up in some of the same classes," Helen said without much hope. "We could fend them off together. Sit back to back and you can glare at one half of the room and I'll glare at the other."

"It could happen," he mused, reaching into his jacket pocket and pulling out a folded scrap of paper. "I haven't even looked at my class schedule yet. We could compare our, I suppose. Gives us a head start on properly planning out our glaring strategy."
