"I had a great deal of it when I was Walking the Bounds," Helen said. "Not so much when I was back living at the House of Uquar."

She plopped her elbows on the table and rested her chin on her hands with a sigh. "I want to go home."

"Guess we're kind of stuck for it, here," Warren said, frowning thoughtfully as he poked at whatever was closest on his plate. Carrot stick. Exciting. "Whatever it's supposed to be."

"I guess we are," Helen said grudgingly. "I don't want to be stoned again. It hurts."

"At least I can come find you if people are really annoying. Where are you living?" She didn't particularly care if he'd like it if she came and found him.

"Room 315," Warren replied. Sure, she could come find him. She wasn't chirpy and annoying like some of the people he'd already met. They could sit and hate people together, that worked just fine for him. "Probably going to look for a job, too. Keeps me busy."

Kept him out of trouble.

"I'm in 501," she said. "With a boy."

And that would be her rolling her eyes again.

"I don't think I need a job. I made the priests agree to give me money. Lots and lots of money."

"Sounds useful," Warren decided. "I should have thought of that before I left."

Though somehow, he doubted that the owners of The Paper Lantern would have given him an advance on his next paycheck, knowing that he was going to be gone at least through the summer.

"They owe me," Helen said with a grim smile. "After all I've done for them..."

"Ah," Warren noted with a nod. "One of those, 'the least they can do,' things."

Warren watched her for a moment, then idly flicked a pea off of his plate, watching it bounce across the table.

"Maybe you're better off here, then." A pause. "Even if high school sucks."

"I don't know," Helen said grimly. "If I decide I like it here, doesn't that mean they win?"

And yes, she'd rather be miserable for the next however long they made her stay than admit that they'd won.

Warren shook his head and leaned backward in his seat slightly.

"Sounds to me like they're expecting you to be miserable out here." He smirked faintly. "So prove them wrong and enjoy it. Anyone that gets their kicks by throwing rocks probably wouldn't like to get news that you're doing well in a place they can't get to."

Warren had moment of being weirdly thoughtful. He wasn't necessarily always right. But he could be thoughtful.

She was not teary. Not at all. Not even the slightest bit.

Which would be why she turned her head slightly away so he wouldn't see her not being teary.

"Maybe I will," she said. And then more firmly. "Yes. I will show them."

Warren was doing his best to not be awkward at the sight of Helen looking away so that she could be not-teary.

He wasn't really the greatest at dealing with not-teary girls. So he sort of cleared his throat and decided to be... friendly or something.

"If you want help with that," he ventured, "I'm in room 315. Can probably come up with ways to make this place... good for you."

Or... something.

She rubbed at her face hard, clearing away all trace of... anything that wasn't supposed to be there. "I would like that," she said. "Very much."

Warren gave a bit of a nod. Okay. Not being not-teary anymore. That was good.

"Good." See? It was good. "Whatever works, right?"

"Yes. Whatever it takes. I will be happy here if it kills me!"
