"Because of the whole being anti-vampire and demon thing, plus reading Sumerian and Latin and a bunch of other dead languages?" Dawn explained. "Plus, I like my salami sandwiches with peanut butter."

"That's not weird. That's just interesting," Meg said. "You are a very interesting person."

She cracked up. "You may be too nice for your own good, you know?"

"So I've been told many, many times," she said. "Speaking of nice, I met your friend Faith the other day. She was sweet."

Meg realized after spending five minutes with Faith that she wasn't exactly the normal definition of nice. But she had been very nice and sweet to Meg and that was good enough for her.

"...really?"

"Yeah," Meg said, raising an eyebrow. "Is she not supposed to be?"

"Oh, no, she just must have really liked you. Faith's kind of...an acquired taste," she said, trying not to make Faith sound so much like...Faith. "She's only nice to certain people."

"I kind of gathered that when I was talking to her," Meg admitted. "But she was very nice to me." Of course it was rare when Meg met somebody who wasn't nice to her.

"I'm glad. Gonna be weird not being able to see her whenever I want, y'know?" She took a sip of lemonade. "I think I got spoiled, having her here."

"Yeah, we've both definitely been spoiled," Meg sighed. "The summer is going by too fast."

"See, if we were different kind of people, we'd figure out a way to make time stop, or maybe get us stuck in one of those time-loopy things so we could stay."

"Man, that would be so awesome. Too bad we aren't that kind of people," she said. "...Dammit."

"Do we know that kind of people? Because that might be a loophole."

Meg chewed on her lip as she tried to think. "I don't think I know any of those people. You?"

Dawn...might have immediately thought of both Willow and Andrew. But Willow was out of town and Andrew was...no. "Uh uh. Darn it. This is going to require a new plan."

"I knew I should have flunked everything last term," Meg said, frowning.

The part of her that had spent a summer with Willow rebelled at just hearing that. "But...Stanford. Maybe we just need to move it closer, and this is the kind of stuff I didn't think of before I spent two years here."

"We should convince the island to move to California," Meg said, nodding. "I mean, we're only an hour away from each other so if we put the island between Stanford and Berkeley then it'll only be a half hour away from the both of us."

Dawn couldn't help grinning. "I think this is a much better plan. Plus it'd be warmer and there could be surfing. An hour, huh? I'm gonna need to get a car or a bike or figure out buses or something." Something told her she was going to need someone who'd been in and around Fandom, so she didn't start thinking she was dreaming or something.

"What do you think we need to do to convince the island?"

"Yeah, I've got my own place too. My parents didn't want me to be in the dorms with the sinners," Meg said, rolling her eyes. "You're welcome to visit whenever you want. You'd get your own bedroom." Yes, Meg was spoiled.

"Uh...I don't think money is going to work," she said. "And I'm not into ritual sacrifice. Maybe there's some sort of secret 'move to California' dance we can perform?"

"Oooh, cool!" She'd totally be taking Meg up on that, yes. "Wait. They let you live in the dorms here and they won't let you live in them at Stanford?" Dawn started giggling. "I guess your parents haven't met Dean or Alec, huh?"

"We should definitely do that. Probably at dawn or midnight--those are the best times for stuff like ritual dances."

"My parents think girls and guys live in separate dorms here," Meg admitted. "And, no, they haven't met anybody from here. My sister has met Dean though. Then again, I think Lizzie is worse than Dean or Alec when it comes to that sort of thing."

Meg chuckled. "I'd totally be up for a dawn or midnight ritual dance. I might need some liquor beforehand, but I'll do it."

"Wow." She couldn't even imagine having kept that secret from Buffy for two years. "Wait. You have a sister who's worse than Dean or Alec? How?"

"We totally should," she nodded enthusiastically. "This is important, and I'm up for anything but tequila, because that apparently ends very badly for other people."

"Let's just say she did things that landed her in an all girls Catholic school," she said, shaking her head. Lizzie had an affinity for older men.

"I heard. You get anywhere near my hair with a sharp object and I'll have to hurt you," she teased.

"Wow. That's...wow." She wasn't sure, but she thought she was impressed.

Dawn glanced around oh-so-casually, looking for Sheppard. "I've been hiding from John all week. I think he may kill me. I wouldn't cut your hair, though. It doesn't stick up funny." At least, she thought that was her logic.
