Ino smiled. "I'll just bug you 'til you do."

A beat.

"I'm Ino, by the way."

Oh. Oh, Warren already hated summer camp.

"Warren," came his reply. "Is there any reason that you're being so--"

He took a moment to look for the proper word. Obnoxious? Stubborn?

"Annoying?"

"You mean beyond the whole because-I-can-be part?" Ino asked innocently. "Might be 'cause I like meeting new people."

"I don't," Warren offered. See, he was totally having a conversation now. About how obnoxious, stubborn, and annoying this girl was. It counted. "Not a people-person."

Not unless he had to be. If he got himself a job here on this island, maybe he'd be more civil if people wanted to talk.

It totally counted. And Ino had heard far worse besides.

"And that's why the people have got to come to you," she said confidently. "'Cause you won't seek them out on your own."

"That's right. I won't."

A pause.

"That doesn't mean I want them to come to me." He was trying to nip this blossoming friendship in the bud, here. He wasn't having much luck with that.

"You'll get over that," she said cheerfully. "Because I'm totally not going to go away."

Um. Yes.

"I hate you already," Warren decided, and he figured he just had to share. "You're not going to start following me around or anything, are you?"

Because if she was, he was going to have to write angry letters home telling his mother how much he resented her for sending him here.

That would show them. That would show them all.

"Well, now," Ino pretended to consider that. "I totally could. Oh! I could even get your room number from the directory!"

Poor, poor Warren.

"I won't let you in," Warren grunted. As if that would dissuade anyone who was really bent on torturing him relentlessly.

There was a scowl. The scowling was epic.

"Why me?"

Ino considered his other question. "Because grumpy boys are always fun? And challenging. It's important. Because you're new, and I'm not, and you're kinda cute in all your 'don't talk to me' vibe thing?"

Well. That was... not exactly the response that Warren was expecting.

So he grunted again, poked at one of the cookies on his plate (sullen boys could eat cookies too, dammit), and attempted to continue scowling.

"I'm not cute," he insisted. His insistence was, quite possibly, cuter as a result.

"I'll argue," he decided. Because he could argue. If she was going to torment him, then he was going to be argumentative, damn it. "I'm not."

"Sure then, argue," that got a grin though. "And that just makes it even cuter, thus proving my point."

"I hate you so, so, so damn much," Warren grumped, debating if he should get up and move to a different table, or if she'd follow him there, too.

He was going to glance around in an attempt to find another empty table anyhow.

"I was here first," Warren informed her as though he expected it would make any difference. Really, he should have known better. "I didn't invite you."

He was. He really, really was. And getting more grumpy by the moment.

"Or cute."

And he looked around, realized that there really wasn't anywhere to retreat to, and he sat down again.

"Why?"
