"I wouldn't do that," Cal told her with a slight smile. "All that diner food is so not good for you."

"Comin' in doesn't mean I have to eat," she replied, quirking a smirk at him.

"True," Cal agreed, to an extent. "But then you're loitering..."

He turned the slight, suspicious frown back on Amber. "You've been grinning ever since you started talking to me. You just in a good mood, or is something up?"

Amber's grin fell. Just like that. All in the space of four words.

"I was in a good mood; is it botherin' you?"

And that was...very adverse to the effect that Cal would have wanted or expected. "Uh, no, of course not. I was just...making sure that, like, you and Ino hadn't gotten together and were planning a soap attack or something."

Because girls did that.

Especially girls like Ino, although perhaps not so much Amber.

He shook his head a little. "No, I'm glad it's a good mood."

She looked away from him, shoving her hands deeper down into her pockets, as far as she could tuck them away. "I haven't talked to Ino in quite some time, so no, no soap attackin'."

It wasn't Ino's fault, but Amber resented her anyway. Childishly most like, but it was her feelings and she couldn't very well make them go away.

Cal eyed Amber as she looked away, closing herself off a bit more. "You were in a good mood, remember?" he informed her, nudging her slightly with his tone. He felt bad, because it was kind of his fault. And, well...it wasn't like she was very good at hiding the reason why. She'd mentioned some of the trouble with Liir, although not much, and since he knew that Ino and Liir were close...

...it didn't exactly take a rocket scientist.

"Yah, I was," she supplied with a flicker of her eyes over at him. Reaching up, she tucked an errant strand of hair back behind her ear, then back in her pocket her hand went.

Amber looked away again. "There's lots of new students here. Met any of them yet?" She was determined to be evasive here; no sense in talking about people that just hurt her anyway. And no reason to declare why her mood changed in the first place. Let him be confused if he was; it would serve him right.

Ouch. Cal winced a little at that simple statement, feeling even worse as he watched her tuck her hair behind her ear. "Uh, not yet," he admitted, tapping a little ash from the end of his cigarette. "I'm not exactly social, Amber."

[identity profile] minnesota-teen.livejournal.com 2008-07-05 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yah, me either. On the social part at least. Can I bum a cigarette?" No, she didn't smoke. So? She could do it if only to give her hands something to do. She felt freaking awkward of a sudden.

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-07-05 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"You don't smoke," Cal said, his frown deepening. Especially since she wasn't going to start, either, on his watch. Not if he could help it. He didn't need... "You'll get cancer."

[identity profile] minnesota-teen.livejournal.com 2008-07-05 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
"Whatever," she shrugged. "The whole damn town of Mount Rose smokes. My lungs are probably blacker than yours."

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-07-05 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"If you haven't started already," Cal said, "you're not starting now. In fact..."

He took the cigarette out of his mouth, took a moment to look regrettably at the half length still remaining and then dropped it on the ground. His sneakers rubbed it into the dirt. "There. Now I'm not either. What the hell did you want a smoke for, anyway?"

She wasn't seriously getting all bent out of shape over this guy and whatever it was that was going on with Ino, was she?

[identity profile] minnesota-teen.livejournal.com 2008-07-05 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm sorry? Are you standin' there tellin' me what to do, or rather what I'm not goin' to do?"

Amber raised her brow at him, considered his words with his actions and blatantly ignored his question. "I didn't tell you you couldn't smoke."

"They're my cigarettes," Cal told her with a tight shrug, trying to make it seem like he didn't care that she was getting mad at him, but he did. It wasn't fair that she was taking out her anger at Ino out on him. Or Liir for that matter. He wasn't the one who couldn't keep more than one friend. And he was doing this for her own good, anyway. "You want to smoke so bad, you can go get your own. But it's a bad habit. Expensive, dangerous, makes your breath smell and your fingernails turn colors."

[identity profile] minnesota-teen.livejournal.com 2008-07-05 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Amber wasn't mad at Ino. Not in the least. She just resented her is all but that was not what was wrong here. She was just... she wasn't about to tell him that he was the one she was upset with. "You could have very easily just have told me no, you don't share your cigarettes." Besides, she would never start smoking, not for real. It did stink even though she was more than used to the smell of it.

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-07-05 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
He could have, sure, but that wasn't the point. He grunted slightly, rolling his eyes. "Why'd you ask for one anyway? You don't smoke."

[identity profile] minnesota-teen.livejournal.com 2008-07-05 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"Ma enjoys it; it's only likely that her daughter would enjoy it as well," she replied lamely, staring out across the school grounds so she didn't have to look at him being all pissy like...

Hey, wait, why was he getting upset with her?

Amber cut her eyes over at him. "I know you're not upset with me?"

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-07-05 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"Only as much as you're getting mad at me," Cal responded back, arms folding in front him as he returned her look dully.

Re: General Mingling (Summer 2008 - 2.0)

[identity profile] minnesota-teen.livejournal.com 2008-07-05 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm not mad at you," she stated.

Re: General Mingling (Summer 2008 - 2.0)

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-07-05 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"Then I'm not mad at you either," Cal stated back, with a shrug, before he slid his hands into his pockets.

[identity profile] minnesota-teen.livejournal.com 2008-07-05 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Just maybe a little upset.

"You know, your nonchalance doesn't really affect me. You do know that, right?"

Re: General Mingling (Summer 2008 - 2.0)

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-07-05 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Cal eyed her a little, eyebrows frowning, before one of them quirked slightly. "It's nonchalance. It's supposed to be nonaffective by definition, isn't it?"

He sighed, though, looking up a moment with his head tilted back, then rolling it to his other shoulder, stretching his neck. "Not like I can help it; it's just the way I am."

[identity profile] minnesota-teen.livejournal.com 2008-07-05 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yes, but I figure you use it to keep yourself distant. But whatever, right? If it's who you are then it's who you are; not like I'm affectin' you at all," she said, her tone low.

Re: General Mingling (Summer 2008 - 2.0)

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-07-05 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"Although I seem to be affecting you," Cal observed. "You were in a good mood when we started talking, remember?"

And then he had to bring up Ino, and... well, if it was what he thought it was, then he couldn't claim that he didn't know what it was like, but still.
