"You don't smoke," Cal said, his frown deepening. Especially since she wasn't going to start, either, on his watch. Not if he could help it. He didn't need... "You'll get cancer."

"Whatever," she shrugged. "The whole damn town of Mount Rose smokes. My lungs are probably blacker than yours."

"If you haven't started already," Cal said, "you're not starting now. In fact..."

He took the cigarette out of his mouth, took a moment to look regrettably at the half length still remaining and then dropped it on the ground. His sneakers rubbed it into the dirt. "There. Now I'm not either. What the hell did you want a smoke for, anyway?"

She wasn't seriously getting all bent out of shape over this guy and whatever it was that was going on with Ino, was she?

"I'm sorry? Are you standin' there tellin' me what to do, or rather what I'm not goin' to do?"

Amber raised her brow at him, considered his words with his actions and blatantly ignored his question. "I didn't tell you you couldn't smoke."

"They're my cigarettes," Cal told her with a tight shrug, trying to make it seem like he didn't care that she was getting mad at him, but he did. It wasn't fair that she was taking out her anger at Ino out on him. Or Liir for that matter. He wasn't the one who couldn't keep more than one friend. And he was doing this for her own good, anyway. "You want to smoke so bad, you can go get your own. But it's a bad habit. Expensive, dangerous, makes your breath smell and your fingernails turn colors."

Amber wasn't mad at Ino. Not in the least. She just resented her is all but that was not what was wrong here. She was just... she wasn't about to tell him that he was the one she was upset with. "You could have very easily just have told me no, you don't share your cigarettes." Besides, she would never start smoking, not for real. It did stink even though she was more than used to the smell of it.

He could have, sure, but that wasn't the point. He grunted slightly, rolling his eyes. "Why'd you ask for one anyway? You don't smoke."

"Ma enjoys it; it's only likely that her daughter would enjoy it as well," she replied lamely, staring out across the school grounds so she didn't have to look at him being all pissy like...

Hey, wait, why was he getting upset with her?

Amber cut her eyes over at him. "I know you're not upset with me?"

"Only as much as you're getting mad at me," Cal responded back, arms folding in front him as he returned her look dully.

"I'm not mad at you," she stated.

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-07-05 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"Then I'm not mad at you either," Cal stated back, with a shrug, before he slid his hands into his pockets.

Just maybe a little upset.

"You know, your nonchalance doesn't really affect me. You do know that, right?"

Re: General Mingling (Summer 2008 - 2.0)

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-07-05 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Cal eyed her a little, eyebrows frowning, before one of them quirked slightly. "It's nonchalance. It's supposed to be nonaffective by definition, isn't it?"

He sighed, though, looking up a moment with his head tilted back, then rolling it to his other shoulder, stretching his neck. "Not like I can help it; it's just the way I am."

"Yes, but I figure you use it to keep yourself distant. But whatever, right? If it's who you are then it's who you are; not like I'm affectin' you at all," she said, her tone low.

"Although I seem to be affecting you," Cal observed. "You were in a good mood when we started talking, remember?"

And then he had to bring up Ino, and... well, if it was what he thought it was, then he couldn't claim that he didn't know what it was like, but still.

It was her turn to shrug. "Don't worry about it."

"Okay, then. I won't."

Which wasn't true, but, for the sake of civility, he'd pretend to go along with.

Amber looked at him and really kind of hated the fact that she was being bitchy. Most liking he was 'what the fucking' at her in his head. But god, could people not act like they cared around here? Just a little bit? Liir was so wrapped up in himself, his cooking, and Ino, that he blatantly cast aside her friendship because 'Ino is the one sure thing I believe in'. What the hell? And then Cal... apparently she couldn't come by the diner just to visit could she? No, cause then she'd be loitering. If she didn't eat, she'd be loitering and he couldn't have that. Like someone was going to arrest her if she just came in to see him. Whatever. He didn't want her to come in just see him, she wouldn't. Not like she was anyone special.

"Whatever. Just... whatever." Amber reached up with both hands and lifted her hair up off her neck, twisting it and piling it on her head, securing it with a rubber band.

Cal took in a deep breath, but he was careful not to exhale it. That would make his frustration too obvious. This couldn't just be about that thing with Ino and Liir, could it? Maybe she was just on her period...

..But then what was his excuse? He went ahead and let out the sigh. "Aw, come on, Amber. Don't be like that."

Turning to face him, she folded her arms across her chest. "Like what?"

This was a real change for her; usually she was a real yapper.

"Like this," Cal said. "You're trying to act like you're not mad, when you clearly are. Listen, I didn't mean to piss you off, okay?"

How the hell was he supposed to know that it would, anyway?

Clearly Amber was touchy.

"And I said don't worry about it. I don't want to stand here and argue, Cal. I mean, it's just a bunch of bullshit anyway, what I'm feelin'. I'll get over it. I get over everything." That wasn't exactly true; she did shove Becky Leeman pretty good, ripping her hair even.

That had been most fun.

Cal gave Amber one good, strong look that he hoped made it clear that, by now, he'd hoped she knew he wouldn't think that anything she'd have to say or think about would be bullshit, before throwing up his hands a little. "Okay," he said, "fine. If you don't want me worrying about it, I won't, and we can stop standing here and arguing. I'm going to get something to drink." He started to turn away, hands slipping back into his pocket. "I'll see you later, I guess."

Amber didn't say anything, she just turned around and headed in the opposite direction.
