Behold! More tables and chairs, away from all the informational stuff! Enjoy the food!

[OCD is up! This is the FIRST post for general mingling. Please use this post first, if your browser can handle the comment load. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are here and there is more room for mingling here.]

Ender sat quietly, a plate of food in his lap and his eyes trained on the picnic. It was a little chaotic, and he found himself missing, not for the first time, the quiet order of Battle School, or even his old room in Eros.

But where he sat, it was quiet, and it gave him the opportunity to observe.

Hannibal resisted asking this kid if he had any Grey Poupon.

Barely.

"Hey." He leaned over and looked around. "You new too?"

"Ho." His reply almost felt automatic; the interruption felt like a disturbance. But Ender was new, and he might as well make an effort to learn faces, to undermine the sense of unease he felt at this crowd of people he didn't know by face, let alone by name. "What gave you that idea?"

"The radar implanted in my head," Hannibal said and tapped his temple. "It goes off at girls, new people, and dogs. It's kind of tetchy."

"Must not leave a lot of space in the rest of your head."

It was a little like the banter back at Battle School, except the slang was a little different. He studied Hannibal, categorizing him quietly.

"Girls, food, sleep, beer, guns," Hannibal ticked off. "That's all I need in my head."

Pause.

"And the occasional movie musical but if you tell anyone that, then we just can't be friends or buddies or amigos."

Guns. He wasn't surprised. It didn't matter where you went or what you did: people would always be most interested in ways to hurt each other.

Ender didn't say anything about it. Hannibal talked a lot-- it must make contact easier for him. Play as if you're everybody's friend. Buddy. Amigo. "I think your secret's safe," he said, "I've never seen any."

"Never seen any?" Hannibal mock gasped, hand to his heart. "You're not a fan of those foreign movies with the dippy subtitles, are you? Where you can't watch the actual damn movie because you're too busy reading the stupid things at the bottom of the screen?"
endsthegame: (the way it is)

"I haven't seen any of those, either," Ender said. He was calm, but the other boy talked a lot. He guessed it was supposed to be funny, but he couldn't make out what he was talking about, and he found it a little bit annoying. "I was wrong. It's all the talking that takes up the space in your head."

"It is pretty much the definition of organized chaos, isn't it?" Seregil asked, after having watched the other boy watch the picnic for a bit.
endsthegame: (looking askance)

He'd felt someone watching him for a little while now. Fine. They could; it didn't matter. Let them watch.

And then they spoke, and Ender considered his answer. "I can't find the 'organized'."

"Yes, that part can get a little lost in the shuffle sometimes," Seregil admitted. "Trust me, it's there though."
endsthegame: (is a little brilliant)

Finally, Ender looked up to consider the other boy. "It's always there. I'm just still looking."

Seregil smiled, liking the new boy's demeanor. "You can learn a lot from just looking," he agreed. "I'm Seregil."

"I'm Ender," he said. Another person come to be his friend. He could almost pretend he was lucky. "You're not new."

Seregil shook his head. "I've been here since the beginning of the winter term. Which is actually further back than you might think based on the weather."
endsthegame: (considering you)

"So there are multiple terms."

That was new-- or maybe it had always been that way, and life just hadn't let Ender notice.

On his way look for Chad, Teddy gave a friendly wave at who he thought was new.

Being gone for a term made this difficult...

"Hi!"

It wasn't really startling. But the people here were talkative: far moreso than he'd become used to. Or, at the very least, in different ways.

No one knew him here. That was something. "Ho," Ender replied, looking up.

Teddy smiled at the weird 'ho'. "Are you new?"

[personal profile] endsthegame 2008-07-05 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm new," Ender confirmed, studying the newcomer carefully. It was the first question on everyone's minds, it seemed. There would be no slipping into the crowds here, either, but for different reasons. "I take it you're not."

Weirdness. Somehow, it seemed like a funny word, considering everything. But dutifully, he asked regardless-- duty was the wrong word. He was curious. "'Weirdness'?"

"Like, um, people turning into animals or how the island seems to be moving."

"The island is moving?"

That seemed more relevant than the animals.
