Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Despite the fact that they were still in Antarctica, the weather for the picnic was beautiful. It was sunny, warm, and clear enough to see many of the icebergs circling the island from the school's location. If people were still cold, there was more warm food than usual out on the tables, and hot drinks were being kept well-stocked.

Along with the tables and chairs near the food, there was a table of nametags, and two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

It was time for the picnic to begin!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

"I've got a little sister back home in Tokyo City, Japan. And I only know that it's a different world because the handbook I got said so. We have an America in my world but you don't get there through a portal, you just fly. In a plane, I mean! Fly in a plane." Momoko tilted her head. "Is that how everyone travels here, by portal?"

Then Momoko's eyes got big and she stepped a bit closer to Rikku. "The island MOVES? That. Is. So. Cool! How does it move? Giant robots? No no. That's stupid. Water's too deep. Some kind of flying device?"

"Ooooh, the handbook," Rikku said, nodding sagely. She'd kinda trashed hers, which explained why she was so freaking confused for the first month or so. "I'm kinda ... not from here? This world, I mean. Like. The world I'm from isn't this planet? Whoa, that makes me sound like I'm an alien. I'm not. It's some weird ... reality dimensional thingie."

Very scientific term, right there.

"I don't really know how we got here. It was an airship, but we had to go ... sideways. It's hard to explain, it just kinda happened. I didn't know about the portals. Those are way nicer."

She bounced again. "It does! It's been all over the place this summer. Greece and France and somewhere with a volcano and somewhere else with lemurs and now it's here, in the freaking cold." Minor pout. "I hate the cold, dang it."

"Mhhm hm." Momoko nodded, calm for a moment and, scarily enough, understanding every single thing Rikku said. "Yeah. The professor built us a mecha that was supposed to fly through Time but we ended up in a different dimension too. I understand: you can't be an alien on this planet if where you're from doesn't have this planet to be alien from."

All of that made sense in Momoko's head. How, the world may never know.

"The island moved to France and Greece? That would have been fun, but I had enough of volcanoes when ours erupted two years ago." Her face shadowed a bit at the memory, then she cheered again and looked around. "It doesn't seem too cold out. Are we not in Virginia now? How can you tell?"

"Exactly!" Rikku said, nodding along. "I mean, there are aliens here, I'm just -- from somewhere else entirely. Uh. Which you've never heard of, but that's okay, no one has. Except me. Obviously. Oh, and Lulu, she's from my home, too."

Following Rikku-logic was nothing short of a miracle. Maybe she and her little sister had similarly dysfunctional brains?

"Ugh. The volcano-place was really pretty, but things started smelling bad and there were lots of storms right before the volcano went off, and that part sucked," she grimaced. "I hate storms. But we zipped away before it blew up. Um. We're in ... Antarctica now? The cold stops outside the island, sort of, but it's chillier here than it usually is. And seeing glaciers doesn't help matters. I, uh, kinda grew up in the desert."

Let's see. Momoko's dysfunctional brain focused on two points:

"There's real aliens here?...And we're in Antarctica? Like with glaciers and penguins and polar bears and seals and spaceships and are they evil or good?"

Taking things a point at a time -- and with, perhaps, a new perspective on how it must be, for others to talk to her -- Rikku considered, then replied.

"Real aliens, you betcha. Most of them look human, but a few don't. Antarctica is what they told me. I've seen glaciers but I don't know about the polar bears or seals. There are penguins, I just haven't gone to see them yet. Aaaaaaaaaaaaand. Luke had a spaceship, but he wasn't an alien. And he wasn't evil. Most of the people here aren't evil."

"Oh my gosh, this place is gonna be awesome! How does anyone even study?" Which reminded her: "By the way, how hard are the classes? Are the teachers really harsh here?"

"Not even," Rikku grinned, bouncing. And glad her new little sib didn't seem scared off by the fandom weirdness. "The summer classes are things like how to blow things up and how to be awesome, and then year-round you get cool classes on technology and science-y stuff and how to fix cars and all kinds of interesting stuff. I love classes here."

A school with free picnic food on the lawn and glaciers in the bay, aliens and penguins wandering about being not-evil, and classes on how to blow things up? It wasn't weirdness; Momoko was just obviously in heaven. She had stepped into the portal and *poof*.

Science and technology? "Well, I could use some help in the technical area. As it is, I'm banned from helping in the lab except to decorate the Christmas tree. Is it ALIEN technology? And what's the 'be awesome' class about?"

"Ooooooh, I love technical stuff!" Rikku said, bouncing. "I can build machina and droids and reverse-engineer things. You have such awesome things in this world! What do you need help with?"

She considered her other question. "Uh. I didn't take the class on being awesome. My ex did, though. He made everyone wear suits and ask out lots of people."

"Wow, you can build droids? Are machina what your world calls mechas?" This was so cool! Momoko had to have the coolest big sister at the whole school!

"I can use technology - I have a mecha back home that I can pilot and all - but problems seem to get worse when I try to help fix something. The professor says it's because I get bored too easily and I look for shortcuts instead of doing things the right way."
