Detention [Saturday]

All of the students who'd earned or been given detention had been told to meet Fraser outside of the Danger Shop. And that's precisely where he was.

"Good morning," he said pleasantly. "I trust you all slept well and I thank you for being on time. Please enter the Danger Shop."



It is now seven-oh-six. You have exactly eight hours and fifty-four minutes four hours and fifty four minutes to think about why you're here. To ponder the error of your ways and you may not talk. You will not move from these seats and you will not sleep.

"Before you begin your detention," Fraser said, looking down at them, "I would like to hope that we never meet again in this circumstance. I once met an Inuit elder who said that, those who get into trouble once learn from their mistakes. Those who get into trouble twice obviously have hard heads and deserve whatever trouble comes at them next."

He smiled and then gathered up each person's snacks before shooing them into the Danger Shop library.

Jaina had no intention of explaining who she was to anyone. The way she figured, if that was a complicated answer at her age, she was doing something wrong.

Therefore she got bored quickly and debated throwing things at people to get their attention. What, they tended to do it to her...

Ignore the boy in the back tossing an advanced paper airplane at her head. He had a surprising amount of hair.

And he wasn't even a rabbit.

Jaina had expected that eventually. She turned around when it hit her and greeted him with a smile and a, "So should I be jealous?"

He returned her smile easily despite his confusion. "Of...?"

"You and my roommate," she said simply. "Don't think I didn't hear radio."

"I'm pretty sure you know the answer to that," he said. "Given she was only helping to rid me of some accessories when I happened to turn back."

"The barrettes were necessary," she pointed out. "I wasn't about to start cutting fur so you could see."

"Would cutting not have been easier? And that doesn't explain the bow," he argued.

"You'd had enough scissors issues this week, I was not about to add to them," Jaina insisted. "...And the bow was just because I was bored."

"My scissor issues seem to have resolved themselves, thanks," John reminded her. "And just wait till I get you back for the bow."

"You were cute!" she said. "Still are. Told you you wouldn't have time to miss it. Wallaby?"

He patted the top of his head. "I think it's residual rabbit. Like maybe Fandom gave me hair rather than clothes when I turned back."

"Yeah, we sort of didn't account for that happening, did we?" she said with a little wince. "How'd you get out of there?"

"So," Ino said conversationally, "did you do something to deserve this, or you just unlucky this time 'round?"

"Technically, I guess," Jaina said with a shrug. "I refused to crash in flight class. What about you?"

"You were expected to crash? Doesn't, that, uh, yeah... like suicide, in a way? And I mouthed off at Tyler-sensei 'bout how if he wanted us to take out a building full of the 'most evil scum ever' that it didn't make sense to send an evacuation order to them first." Ino shrugged. "First detention I've officially 'deserved' really."

"It was a simulation to teach us how to crash right, or something. But I have kind of crashed and it doesn't go that way and I wasn't going to do it," she explained. "Okay... an evacuation order to the people you're going after?"

"That's, um, wow. I have no words for that." Ino shook her head. "And, I know, it totally doesn't make sense. He said it was 'cause he didn't want us to blow up even fake people, but... uh... the scenario didn't make sense."

"So you had to go blow them up without actually blowing them up? Or was the objective just to take out the building?" she wondered, trying to understand the scenario.

"Apparently, it was to take out the building, but that's not what he said at first, you know? I guess he didn't think anyone would wonder why we were... evacuating the bad guys."

Because, uh, yeah.

Jaina frowned. "If you don't take out the bad guys, destroying the building is just unnecessary collateral damage. Even if there's something inside you're trying to obliterate, it can all be recreated if you leave the people alive to redo their work. That makes no sense."

Yes, she was a little on the gray side of things.

Considering that Ino still didn't see why people thought it was bad to kill people, even if you were just following orders, yeah... Ino lived in the grey without realizing it.

"And," she said, glad at someone agreed with her, "they'd be even more likely to kill you then. But, I guess, Tyler-sensei disagrees because... well, here I am."

"At least you're in good company," Jaina said. "And it seems like an easy punishment."

"The company is good, but this is so boring," Ino laughed. "I was hoping for something more exciting honestly."

"I got turned into a newt in my last detention," Jaina said. "Undeserved, by the way. I should be okay with boring." She wasn't.
