Luau: The Main Campfire: Friday Evening

The irony of having a Hawaiian luau while in Greece probably hadn't escaped anyone. But given that the majority of the students probably couldn't pinpoint Hawaii on the map, it didn't seem like that was enough of a reason to cancel what had become a summer tradition.

So in the early evening, the main campfire was transformed into a party place with coconuts, grass skirts, and leis for everyone. A pig was slowly roasting over the fire, and a huge ~~moddable~~ buffet spread out to the flagpole.

A dance floor was set up, and Hawaiian music was playing, but there was also plenty of grass spread with blankets for the less-rhythm-inclined.

Cal pointed toward the food table. "Free food. It's like a beacon."

"I was worse about that when I came here," he admitted. "But it's true all the same. And I've never had pork prepared in such a way before. The seasoning smells very good."

"Gotta admit that it's my first pig roast, too." Cal folded his arms in front of him as he looked at the fire with his attention entirely on food this time, trying to pick up exactly what the seasonings might be "Should be good."

"Have you had any trouble with anything?" he asked, always one to be helpful.

"You mean, like, in general?"

"In general. Specifically."

He shrugged, noncommittal as only a teenager can be.

"I had a bit of trouble adjusting in some ways to this place. So I ask."

"Not really," Cal admitted, shrugging as well. "I'm kind of used to really being thrown through a loop, I guess. It's weird, but...so's a lot of things."

"I've never heard someone say they're used to being thrown through a loop."

For, but not through. And how could you be used to being surprised?

"I'm glad, though That you're not having trouble."

A grin.

"Also awkward, but I'm sure you've seen that well enough."

"Yeah, Awkward's practically my middle name."

Practically. If it wasn't Helen.

"But, I mean, even that's not bad. People are actually really nice and friendly here. That's almost stranger for me than all the weird stuff everyone keeps telling me about."

"...I don't know if I should be glad I'm not the only one or sad that someone else had a similar experience," he said dryly.

"We could go down to the beach," Cal offered, hitching his thumb over his shoulder in the general vicinity of an eventual beach, "and kick sand in each other's face for old time's sake, if you want."

"We don't have beaches. Oz is landlocked."

But he got the joke. He was just making a rather flat one of his own.

"But thank you for the gesture."

"Hey, anytime, man; the offer still stands."

"I'll keep it in mind," he said.

He breathed out.

"Do you know what the point of all this is? This 'luau'?"

"Besides socialization and free food? Because I think that basically covers it."

"Well, we've done that before. But it was just called a party.

"Amber said it had something to do with an island named Hawaii, but didn't really understand."

"It's just a theme," Cal explained with a shrug. "A gimmick. Something people do when they feel like 'just a party' won't be interesting enough..."

"Ah."

People were mildly ridiculous. It was a good reason for most of the things he saw, even on Fandom. Especially on Fandom.
