Library [05/12]

Sam didn't have to open the library today, but he felt bad about not working last week...when he also hadn't needed to be here. It couldn't be said that he wasn't a total dork about his job.

"At least you've got Peter," Dawn told him. "Like I've got Luke and Meg."

He wasn't going to say it. He really wasn't going to say it. But his inner Dean refused to stay quiet.

"You could always snuggle with Meg if you miss me too much."

She stared at Sam and tried not to burst out laughing. "Did you and Dean switch bodies again?"

"No, but we've been around each other long enough that I know what kind of a response he'd make to things. Like, you know, what I just said," Sam replied.

"Before or after he waggled his eyebrows?"

"He'd say that, then waggle his eyebrows and leer," Sam replied, demonstrating for Dawn.

"Hey, that's pretty good. Now try and explain to me about why the Impala doesn't need a name, but still qualifies as a her."

"She doesn't need a name because she has a title, and that's better than a name. And she's a her because she's taken care of our family for almost our whole lives," Sam said. He wasn't terribly surprised by how easy that was to come up with."

"That's almost exactly what he said."

"That's the same lecture I get every time I call the Impala an it," Sam said. "Like it has feelings and will die on me if I don't call it a girl."

She grinned. "Do you really want to risk it?"

"It's a strong, solid car," Sam said. "I doubt I'm going to hurt its feelings any more than I did when I was a kid."

"What did you do when you were a kid?" Dawn asked, settling in for weetiny Sam stories.

Sam laughed. "Well, when we were younger, I used to swear that when I got old enough to drive, I'd drive a real car, and not the Impala. I think Dean might have actually turned purple at the idea that the Impala's not a real car."

"What was a real car?"

"Something made after I was born?" Sam replied.

Dawn snickered. "You don't fit into most of the cars made after you were born."

"I fit into big cars," Sam said. "Like SUVs and trucks. Those totally count."

"Gas guzzlers," she teased, shaking her head. "Does this mean you're too tall to be environmentally responsible?"

"They make hybrid SUVs and trucks. They get good gas mileage," Sam pointed out.

"Do hybrids count as real cars in Winchester-land?"

"They do to me. Probably not to Dean and my dad, but..."

"But you're not Dean and your dad. Gotcha."

"Not about cars," Sam explained. "Or, you know, anything else."

She smiled slightly at him. "You're definitely an original Winchester."
