Oh look, there were tables and chairs over here too, away from all the informational stuff. Enjoy the food!

Hinata quite liked trees, they tended to have less people around them for whatever reason.

She blinked, not quite dismayed but not happy either, at the sight of someone else. "H-hello?"

He looked over at the new girl, feeling as if there was something familiar to her that he couldn't quite place. Some sense of something, or something--

He shook it off.

"Hello."

She offered him a small smile and resisted the urge to fidget. And if he noticed, around her neck was a forehead protector that matched the one that Ino wore around her waist.

What to say now? She didn't know-- "There's a l-lot of people around today."

And then promptly felt ridiculous. Wasn't that obvious?

He finally pinned the strange familiarity on the thing around her neck. It was the same as the thing Ino wore on her head or around her waist.

"There are," he agreed. "I'm not much good with people. Especially in large groups."

Her stammer wasn't mentioned. He had trouble with such things himself and the most irritating part was when people noticed.

"I-I don't like it," she admitted, "and I had no w-warning."

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
He pointed up to the tree.

"You could hide up there. I'll keep anyone from coming up, if you like. I had the same thing happen to me when I came."

"I w-would," she admitted, "but Father would be disappointed."

And she tried so hard not to disappoint him.

He almost winced.

"Is he here?"

Re: General Mingling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] shyest-eyes.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
"N-no," Hinata said, looking down, "but he'd still be disappointed. I-I'm not supposed to be nervous of people."

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
"Well," he said thoughtfully, "you could sit and talk with me. And I'm people. And we're already talking, so it's probably not going to be too much harder to keep talking to me."

Re: General Mingling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] shyest-eyes.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
That got a smile. "Y-you're only one," she pointed out, "it's easier one-on-one."

"It doesn't mean you're not being social, though. So you can be social, and not feel too uncomfortable. Hopefully."

He gave her a rather sheepish smile.

"I'm terribly awkward, though."

Not social enough for him though.

She offered him a rueful smile of her own. "I'm n-not so graceful," with words, "either." She was, however, a ninja and moved like one if you saw past her hesitant demeanour.

"I," a pause there, "d-do have manners though, forgive me. I'm Hyuuga Hinata."

"Liir Thropp," and he was quite proud that he got the name out all at once. He hadn't managed it earlier.

He held out a hand.

"I'm very close with... I don't suppose you know Ino, do you? What with--"

He pointed to the symbol around her neck.

She went to shake his hand, then brightened at his mention of Ino-san.

"A-ano, we went to school together, the same class," Hinata said, one hand drifting up to her neck, "I-I haven't seen her yet today though."

"I'm sure she'll be around," he said, looking around himself. "She was excited about all the new people. And I saw her earlier. She was bouncing."

He smiled, genuinely.

"She's being a little sister for the moment, though. Making me wonder what she's up to."

[identity profile] shyest-eyes.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
"T-that sounds like Ino-san," Hinata agreed, then paused. "Little sister? Like how the school assigns?"

He shook his head.

"No. We just found one another."

He quirked his lips.

"I'm sure you'll like people, find people," he said. "If I could do it, anyone can."

"I-I hope so," she said, glancing down.

A moment later, there was a brownie put directly in the way of her line of vision.

"Here. Have this."

Because he wasn't anything like good at comforting people with anything but food. Luckily, his food was generally fantastic. Was it a bit of a cop out? Yes. Did it very often work? Yes.

...

People here kept feeding her. Hinata thought of all the dessert that Cassandra had foisted off on her earlier, and knew that there wasn't any polite was to...

How did you say 'I've already had more dessert today than in the last two years of my life' and say it politely?

She smiled, a bit ruefully. "T-thank you," Hinata said, "are y-you eating as well?"

"Yes," he said with a nod. "Well, as well as I ever do."

He was filling out some, along with the added inches of height, but he was still largely lithe of frame. The broad shoulders had yet to actually assert themselves, but there were signs that they would despite his usual slouch.

"Mostly, I cook. Because it's easier to hand over a brownie than figure out something to say."

She had to agree with that.

"I-I like cooking," Hinata admitted, "but Father s-say's it's not proper for me to do it so often." When she could be training.

...

She blinked at him, trying to figure out the way that he'd leapt to that conclusion. "W-what?"
