Oh look, there were tables and chairs over here too, away from all the informational stuff. Enjoy the food!

...

People here kept feeding her. Hinata thought of all the dessert that Cassandra had foisted off on her earlier, and knew that there wasn't any polite was to...

How did you say 'I've already had more dessert today than in the last two years of my life' and say it politely?

She smiled, a bit ruefully. "T-thank you," Hinata said, "are y-you eating as well?"

"Yes," he said with a nod. "Well, as well as I ever do."

He was filling out some, along with the added inches of height, but he was still largely lithe of frame. The broad shoulders had yet to actually assert themselves, but there were signs that they would despite his usual slouch.

"Mostly, I cook. Because it's easier to hand over a brownie than figure out something to say."

She had to agree with that.

"I-I like cooking," Hinata admitted, "but Father s-say's it's not proper for me to do it so often." When she could be training.

"Oh. Is there not a lot of food in your family?"

...

...

She blinked at him, trying to figure out the way that he'd leapt to that conclusion. "W-what?"

"We had to be very careful," he explained, "with rationing our food, back home. So I could only cook something interesting when we had the supplies and I couldn't play about with things too much since it would waste the supplies."

"O-oh," she said, "no, that wasn't--F-father doesn't like it because it's b-beneath our family, he says."

"People don't need to eat in your family?" he asked with a raised brow.

She blushed horribly, certain that this was all her fault that they were miscommunicating so badly.

"A-ano," she stammered, "n-no, j-just that i-it's u-unseemly for u-us to cook, in his o-opinion, when we h-have others to do it for u-us."

"Ah."

It wasn't approving or disapproving. Just... a noncommittal noise.

"Are you nobility, then?"

"N-not like that," she said, "b-but we're one of the oldest clans."

Re: General Mingling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
He considered that for a moment.

"Then your village holds different clans?"

...this was a very odd idea to him. He'd never asked Ino about the matter, but it wasn't anything like how things were at home.

Re: General Mingling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] shyest-eyes.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
She nodded. "M-many clans. The A-Aburame, the Hyuuga, the Inuzuka, we've got more than m-most villages."

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"The Vinkus works a little like that," he said thoughtfully. "Though generally a village will only hold one clan. There might be many different families, but not more than one clan. Of course, there are marriages between clans, carefully orchestrated, but that's for the most well-placed members."

Re: General Mingling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] shyest-eyes.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
She flushed a bit. "M-most marriages for the w-well-placed members are within the clan. T-to keep the bloodline p-pure."

And the blood limit strong.

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"I would think it would weaken the bloodline," he said thoughtfully. "As fresh blood is necessary to prevent defects."

He hadn't gone to school before this, but he knew that well enough. You couldn't live with the Witch and not pick up a little bit of biology.

Re: General Mingling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] shyest-eyes.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"T-the blood limit weakens though," she said.

"Blood limit?" he asked curiously.

"The f-family talent," she said, not going into more detail.

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
That was...

He found himself considering Ino a little bit differently in that light. Not in a negative sense. Just... differently.

"So who you are and who your parents are are extremely important. That you have your parent's abilities..."

Re: General Mingling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] shyest-eyes.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
"N-not all c-clans," she said, trying to explain, "are like that. Some the talent comes out no matter what, and some it's got to be p-protected. It all depends."

Re: General Mingling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's fickle."

He thought about that.

"It sounds a little like things at home. A little."

[identity profile] shyest-eyes.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
"W-what's home like, for you?"

Re: General Mingling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"Now? I wouldn't know. I haven't been back since I came here. And most of the people I would mention are either dead or gone."

He shrugged.

"I should probably change how I say things, considering how I feel. This place is more like home than anything."

"I h-have heard more than one person say that a-about here, today," she admitted.
