"It's okay," he said with a quiet laugh. "Everything's new and really different to me. Someone being hyper isn't that bad. How fast does it take?"

"Maybe a month or two?" Rikku considered, chewing on her lower lip. "I mean, by the time everyone's been someone else for a weekend, and then the guys are all girls or the girls are all guys ... it kinda just turns into, you could wake up with asparagus for a head and go 'hey, look, Fandom's weird again. I hope this wears off quickly.'"

"Sorry!" she squeaked, flailing her arms a little. "It's okay! I promise! Nobody's ever had an asparagus head. Uh. And if you do wake up with an asparagus-head, take some deep breaths and it'll be over before you know it, it'll just be a day or two, max. Okay? Uh. I'm not helping. Crap."

Ned continued to stare. That running off and living in the mountains was looking better and better.

"Ignore it and it'll go away?" he managed to say in a strangled sort of voice.

"It does," she said. It was more of an 'eep.' "And nobody's ever had an asparagus head. No head-weirdness. Except when Hermione got bitten by a lichen but that's totally different and Hermione left anyway. Uh. Sorry?"

"It's okay," he said, getting some of his composure back. "I think something in my head just cracked but that's been coming since the day started. You didn't do it."

"Ohhhhhh." Rikku nodded. "Yeah. That. It usually helps after that happens. You kinda get all floaty and then everything makes sense again."

Damn. She didn't mean to break the newbie.

"Can I help with ... something? Or ... um. Look, it's mostly normal here, just not when it's ... not."

"There aren't any unicorns here, are there?" Ned asked randomly. It made sense to him.

"I'm Rikku," she chirped. "Also not a unicorn. Um. Or an alien or a vampire or anything else. We have some aliens but they're seriously good people and there are slayers to take care of the vampires and I didn't mean to ... break you? Sorry? It's ... it all makes sense after a bit. This island kinda ... does its own thing."

Ned paled at one word and looked around. "Vampires? Did I fall down and end up in one of my nightmares?"

"Do not even worry about the vampires," Rikku said confidently. "We had a Slayer here, and she patrolled, and it was boring most of the time because there just aren't any, here. And if anything bad would happen -- it won't, I mean, this place is weird, but it's safe -- you'd be totally okay because a lot of us are ass-kickers. I mean. I saved the world."

Helped, but close enough.

"Dude." Rikku said, reaching out to lay a hand on his shoulder, unless he got all jumpy at the possibly-being-touched. "Listen to me. No vampires. This place is totally, totally safe. Weird? Yes. Safe? More so. Okay?"

The touch caught him by surprise and he stiffened up and snapped his eyes shut, waiting for something bad to happen. Something bad always happened when he touched things.

Now she was traumatizing the newbie. Awesome.

She was still talking so the touch hadn't hurt her or worse. Good thing she wasn't dead. Then, there's be some nice trauma."

"Sorry," he said, voice tight. "It's...sorry."

"It's okay," she said quickly. "I ... I wasn't going to ... hurt you. Sorry. I ... get all huggy with people and I forget, you know. Personal Space Boundaries, not everyone's a crazy person like me. I didn't mean to, at all, I'm so sorry."

Ned took a few quick breaths and chanced opening his eyes just a crack. She was still alive. Still.

He let out a breath and tried to calm himself down. "No, it's okay. Sorry about that."

"Do not apologize," she said firmly, still misunderstanding his panic. "I came over here 'cause you looked nervous and I thought I could help and instead I freaked you out worse. Uh. Listen. There's nothing to be freaked out about. I promise. I'm a Guardian, back home. I protect people. We get a lot of people like that, here. Nothing bad's gonna happen."

"Oooh, yeah, that's a good one," she nodded. "But gremlin bites are more ... I mean. If it happens, it's embarrassing and everyone teases you and then they all forget about it until it's someone else's turn. Not dangerous."
