Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Oh look, there were tables and chairs over here too, away from all the informational stuff. Enjoy the food!

"I suppose I can drop it," she said, obviously teasing him.

"Suppose?" Cal asked, teasing back with a tone to suggest that there might be trouble if she supposed otherwise, although Cal didn't have the slightest idea of how he could ever follow through on something like that.

Ino's eyebrows shot up, and smiling she shrugged. "What would you do if I said otherwise?" Ino laughed. "I'm totally able to handle myself."

"Well," Cal pointed out after a moment of thought, "I did just meet you. It's not like it would be a whole big thing if you got all miffed because I wouldn't tell you and never talked to me again."

It would certainly make his life a lot less awkward if that happened, too.

...

She cracked up laughing.

"It'd totally take more than that to put me off talking to someone."

And now the cute bouncy blonde girl was even laughing at something he'd said. A lot.

This was just surreal. This was possibly more surreal than Summer's whole Oh, yeah, you're in the future there, big boy bit.

And Cal had no idea how to respond to something like this, so all he gave was a small, thoughtful sounding, "Huh."

She grinned at him again, still giggling. "You'll do fine," Ino said confidently, "I know it."

"Everyone keeps telling me that," Cal observed, a bit warily because, God. Giggling. He hoped that it didn't turn out that he was just acting like a complete idiot and she had actually been laughing at him the whole time. "It makes me worried about where I'd be if that wasn't the case..."

She grinned. And was totally not laughing at him. Seriously. "Just keep an open mind 'bout Fandom and you'll be good," Ino said, "that's the most important thing here. Just go with it."

"I can...definitely keep an open mind about things," Cal said with a nod. "Definitely."

He kind of...had to.

"Good," she beamed, "and if you're lucky your first bit of Fandom weird'll be something like invading multi-coloured sheep. Those were cute."

And, yeah, Cal was thinking that Ino definitely seemed the type of person to find multi-colored sheep to be cute.

"Multi-colored sheep, huh?"

"They were wee and tiny," she said, holding up her hands to demonstrate their size, "I had a blue one that kept trying to eat my hair and had to stop Kabuto from feeding a bunch to his snake."

Wee tiny sheep that at things and could be eaten.

...Interesting.

"And Kabuto is?"

"My kinda sorta boyfriend," Ino grinned, "it's a bit complicated 'cause he's not a people person at all, but we get along well enough. He just graduated, but is staying around for a while." A beat. "He likes to mess with people's heads."

Cal's lips pressed together a bit at that description. "Sounds like a nice guy."

"Oh," she said with a shrug, "he's not. Not at all, though he is polite to people."

"Well, manners are important," Cal deadpanned, although very congenially. Very polite.

"You're mocking me, aren't you?" Ino wrinkled her nose cheerfully at him. "Whatever. I like him anyway."

For some crazy reason.

"Hey, I don't know the guy and I don't really know you, either," Cal held up his hands, "so I may mock, but I don't make any judgments. That's not my style."

She shrugged a bit. "Sorry," Ino said off-handedly, "I'm just used to people giving me a hard time for liking him."

"Well," Cal said, thoughtfully, "I'll meet him," he unfurled a finger, counting of his list as he went, "and then I'll give you a hard time for liking him, and then I'll get you some wee tiny sheep that will eat your hair."

See? Cal paid attention.

He was also thinking that whoever supplied the pot at this school was a ridiculously rich man. Or woman.

Ino totally grinned at him. "We've also had wee tiny knights in armour, and multi-coloured bunnies made of dust." Ino? Was probably not helping to dispel Cal's thoughts about the pot. "So it doesn't have to be sheep. Just wee and tiny and invading."

Cal listed off on his fingers again. "Wee. Tiny. Invading. I think I can remember that."

"It's terribly important," she assured him, "and that's just the tip of the iceberg of weird here. You know, considering the whole Greece thing right now."
