Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Oh look, there were tables and chairs over here too, away from all the informational stuff. Enjoy the food!

"Well," Cal said, thoughtfully, "I'll meet him," he unfurled a finger, counting of his list as he went, "and then I'll give you a hard time for liking him, and then I'll get you some wee tiny sheep that will eat your hair."

See? Cal paid attention.

He was also thinking that whoever supplied the pot at this school was a ridiculously rich man. Or woman.

Ino totally grinned at him. "We've also had wee tiny knights in armour, and multi-coloured bunnies made of dust." Ino? Was probably not helping to dispel Cal's thoughts about the pot. "So it doesn't have to be sheep. Just wee and tiny and invading."

Cal listed off on his fingers again. "Wee. Tiny. Invading. I think I can remember that."

"It's terribly important," she assured him, "and that's just the tip of the iceberg of weird here. You know, considering the whole Greece thing right now."

"Not to mention the future thing," Cal submitted, although it was Summer who told him about that, and he thought Summer was smoking some whacky tobaccy too. "The Greece thing works out good for me, since I am Greek."

"You're not a tour guide though, which is sad," Ino said, laughing, "'cause Lana and I are totally making a list of what traits we like in all the Greek tour guides 'round here. And this is totally a different world entirely from the one I come from so I don't have any idea about the timelines here."

"What year did Summer say it was? 2008, I think? I'm really disappointed there's no nuclear winter. All the books and movies said there'd by nuclear winter by now..."

Because, were there nuclear winter, then everyone might turn out to be effected by all the atomic radiation, and the rest of the world could be little genetically mutated freaks like himself.

There was a slight pause, with Cal eying Ino a little.

"...It's sad I'm not a tour guide?" he asked. "You think I'd make a good one?"

He thought he'd make a terrible one, but it would be interesting to see what kind of person he was projecting himself to be right now.

...

...

"What's a nuclear winter?" Ino asked, tilting her head at him. "And I don't know, it's just that the only Greeks I've met before are tour guides." A beat. "Either that or serving me food."

"Well, if you're in a room long enough with any Greek, they're gonna be likely to serve you food," Cal commented with a slight grin. "We're very big on our food. Unfortunately, my cooking is only mediocre. And, uh, nuclear winter's pretty much just a big, fat game over. Life stops being able to be maintained on the planet because of all the nuclear energy and atomic power, and everything either dies or becomes all distorted and stuff. Probably would never happen, just a bunch of sci-fi stuff, really...I knew a guy who was really into all that."

"Aw," she mock-pouted, "does this mean I can't get you to cook for me?"

Ino considered the rest of it, about the nuclear winter and smirked slightly. "Even if it were likely to happen, there's totally enough superpower on this island to stop it in time."

"I'm Greek," Cal repeated. "Trust me. There will probably be cooking. Just don't expect anything spectacular, although it will be edible. And superpower to stop nuclear power would be interesting..."

"I'm not picky as long as I don't have to cook," she grinned at him. "Totally good with me."

"And, it wouldn't be one superpower I don't think, but put together? Yeah, I'd say Fandom can handle pretty much anything."

"So maybe this place is the reason I didn't get my nuclear winter."

Cal? Was slightly pouting.

Cal was also thinking that this is possibly the longest a girl had ever talked to him. It was kind of surreal.

...

"You wanted the end of everything?"

Re: General Mingling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
"Every beginning has an end," Cal shrugged. "And every end has a beginning. It would have been interesting to see. Nuclear winter is supposed to cause mutations."

And that was as far as he'd let himself go down this road, glancing off into the scenery for a moment.
intraspective: (are you REALLY sure)

"...I think most people would still rather no nuclear winter," she said dubiously.

"I don't know if I'd rather it be the end," Cal specified. "I just think it would be something different to see."

"So I hear...." Cal nodded again. And he was actually starting to believe it a little bit, but he still doubted that he wouldn't exactly feel like anything would be different enough to make him feel normal.
