Oh look, there were tables and chairs over here too, away from all the informational stuff. Enjoy the food!

"That'd make it hard to hang pictures on the wall," Ned said, making the motions of hanging a picture. "Branches don't support weight at all."

He ended up starting to laugh halfway through and shook his head. "Sorry. I never thought anyone would be able to top the boarding school I was out. I thought that place was haunted."

"Well, I kind think," Cal admitted with a light shrug, "that with all the weird places I've lived, I'd kind of beat out a lot of people."

Because, you know...Suburban Detroit on the cusp of the riots, then Middlesex, then one hotel after another, then that park in San Francisco, then living with a transvestite...

"What made you think it was haunted?"

"It was dark," Ned said. He knew that was a weak excuse but it was really all he had. "And quiet. Except for the noises in the dark that broke up the quiet. But those might have been other students getting up or talking. I just convinced myself it was haunted so I could do something at night when I didn't sleep."

"...Do something?" Cal asked, his head tilted a little.

He was also thinking that, by Ned's description, he could have been pretty easily convinced it might be haunted, too. A simple description, but Cal was picturing it; it took the form of the cabin in Petosky, but much larger, obviously, and that cabin was definitely haunted, even if only my memories.

"Well, I didn't sleep," Ned clarified, "and we weren't allowed to get out of bed. I didn't have a book or anything like that. So, I convinced myself the boarding school was haunted. It passed the time."

"So, you'd just...lie there...and think about all the ghosts and stuff?"

"Not very healthy sounding when you put it that way," Ned said and shrugged, blushing a little. "I really didn't have anything else to do."

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"Awww, no," Cal chuckled a little sheepishly, feeling bad. "I didn't mean it like that, man. I think that's kind of cool, actually. Maybe not healthy, no, but, hey, you got a good, active imagination on you."

"Well, let's hope that little habit of mine doesn't transfer over here," Ned said after thinking about it. "I don't want my roommate to think that I think he's a ghost or something. No good would come of that."

Re: General Mingling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"Would make things interesting, though," Cal offered helpfully, and then he asked, "Who's your roommate?"

Not at all because he was possibly interested in tracking down Ned's roommate and trying to pull 'my roommate is crazy and thinks I'm a ghost' stories out of him in a few weeks or anything, really.

"Dick Grayson who is not a unicorn," Ned told him. "That...actually makes sense after a conversation this morning. He's not a ghost, as far as I can tell but things could all change at night."

Re: General Mingling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
"Dick Grayson who is not a unicorn and probably not a ghost, it's too early to tell," Cal repeated, then nodded. "Got it."

He couldn't decide whether that conversation was something he was curious about or if it was one he really, really wanted to know absolutely nothing about.

[identity profile] death-and-pies.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm not insane," he had to say. "At least, I don't feel insane. If I'm coming off insane, I can tone it down."

He couldn't.

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
"Insane people don't usually feel insane," Cal pointed out. That that he wanted to insinuate that Ned was coming off as insane, because, really, comparatively, he wasn't. Just...eccentric.

Re: General Mingling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] death-and-pies.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh." Well, there went his best excuse for escape. 'I'm not insane but I really need to run wildly away from here' just didn't sound as good. "I guess I should be relieved at that. If there's one thing I don't need, it's insanity on top of everything else."

Re: General Mingling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, but," Cal continue, not helping, to be sure, "insanity might help in that case, because it's like you'd know. You know?"

Re: General Mingling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] death-and-pies.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
"...true," Ned said after some thought. "Though, if I was insane, how many people would want to talk to me? Would people even want to get near me?"

Re: General Mingling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
"...Doctors would," Cal answered after a moment to think about it. But, in his experience, the doctors were just as insane...

Re: General Mingling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] death-and-pies.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
"Ew," Ned said and made a face. "I've had enough of official type authority figures for awhile. I think, even if I am insane, I'm just going to pretend I'm not."

Re: General Mingling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Cal approved of this strategy with a thumbs up. "Good thinking. Doctors are all mostly a bunch of whack jobs themselves, anyway."

Not that Cal had issues with doctors for any particular reason or anything. Really.

Re: General Mingling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] death-and-pies.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
"I'll stick with cough syrup and self diagnosis," Ned decided. "I couldn't do any worse than some doctors have done."

Re: General Mingling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Cal snorted derisively. "You can say that again."

And then he wondered if Ned actually would say that again.

Re: General Mingling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] death-and-pies.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Ned didn't but, at another time, he might have. Just not now. "Guess that means you're not here to study medicine?"

Re: General Mingling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
"Nah; I don't know what I'll end up studying in the long run, if anything. I'm just here 'cause I have to go to school somewhere that isn't back home, pretty much. What about you?"

Re: General Mingling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] death-and-pies.livejournal.com 2008-05-10 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
"No idea," he said and shook his head. "The boarding school wanted my bed, they gave me a plane ticket and my suitcase and I was gone before I even knew what was happening."
