Cal approved of this strategy with a thumbs up. "Good thinking. Doctors are all mostly a bunch of whack jobs themselves, anyway."

Not that Cal had issues with doctors for any particular reason or anything. Really.

"I'll stick with cough syrup and self diagnosis," Ned decided. "I couldn't do any worse than some doctors have done."

And then he wondered if Ned actually would say that again.

Ned didn't but, at another time, he might have. Just not now. "Guess that means you're not here to study medicine?"

"Nah; I don't know what I'll end up studying in the long run, if anything. I'm just here 'cause I have to go to school somewhere that isn't back home, pretty much. What about you?"

"No idea," he said and shook his head. "The boarding school wanted my bed, they gave me a plane ticket and my suitcase and I was gone before I even knew what was happening."

"From what I've heard," Cal observed a bit optimistically, "it sounds like kind of an upgrade."

"It is," Ned agreed. "Big upgrade. Upgrade for you too, though, right?"

"That's still to be determined," Cal decided after a moment, and a nod. The places where he'd lived before here had its up and downs, so it was hard to tell which he'd like best.

"If I get a boat with a roof, I'm gonna live on it," Ned decided.

Cal, clearly, supported the boat-as-house idea.

He really wanted that freaking boat now.

"Maybe someday," Ned said, sighing. "Right now, there's a picnic and food. I think I can deal with that for awhile."

Pause.

"I hope."
