Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Oh look, there were tables and chairs over here too, away from all the informational stuff. Enjoy the food!

[WAIT FOR THE OCD PLEASE. OCD IS UP. This is the FIRST post for general mingling. Please use this post first, if your browser can handle the comment load. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are here and there is more room for mingling here.]

Jenny could identify 'in need of a nic fix' from a thousand paces. Her people! So she sidled up to New Pretty Boy and said, "You're new. I'm Jenny."

He blamed the little snort that the abrupt greeting pulled out of him entirely on his nervousness.

"Actually," he managed to get out a joke, which surprised him, "name's Cal. Not new."

"Cal, right. Welcome to Fandom High, in the town of Fandom, on Fandom Island. Greece." Jenny took her pack of Silk Cuts from her pocket, tapped out a cigarette, and casually lit it with her fingertip. "We're all a bit mad here," she mumbled around the cig.

Cal was much, much to distracted by the fact that there was a cigarette and, despite himself, he was already longingly fixating on it and the lips it rested between to notice or wonder exactly how she managed to light it. He wondered if she'd done it on purpose. They always seemed to do it on purpose.

He shook his head a little.

"Did I catch a Greece in there?"

Not that he had any reason to wonder about the Greece or anything.

"Right across the causeway," Jenny confirmed, gesturing with her cig. "Used to be Virginia, but then the island bounced."

It hadn't exactly been on purpose, but then it hadn't exactly not been on purpose, either.

Cal's eyes were locked on any movements of the cigarette. He couldn't help it. But it was better that Jenny was gesturing with it and having him watch that than just focusing on her mouth the whole time.

"You're kidding."

Jenny took a long, loving drag off her cigarette. "I never kid about hot Greeks in skimpy bathing suits. I'm sorry, do you fancy a light?"

"Uhhhh..."

And this was the moment when Cal Stephanides proved that he really has a willpower of steel.

"No, thanks. I...I shouldn't."

There was the nice distraction of thinking of hot Greeks in skimpy bathing suits, although he had a feeling that his picture of them and Jenny's were probably different.

Actually...he was having trouble picturing it.

"Uh, have you actually...met many Greeks?" he asked. "I mean, with some exceptions, of course, we don't tend to be the...most attractive race, really. Not overall. You have a thing for hairy men, maybe?"

Or hairy women.

He still had nightmares about waxing, which were ironic. Now that he wanted facial hair, he couldn't seem to fill any in very well.

"No one cares. And if they do, I blow smoke in their face," Jenny said dismissively.

"I have, actually. You're Greek? Smashing. Welcome to the land of your ancestors and all that."

"Well, it's not that," Cal said. "I'm just trying to quit. Or cut back. Trying to stick with cigars. And, yeah, I'm Greek. Third-generation American-Greek, anyway."

Complete with the flair for tragic poetry.

"That's seriously Greek scenery over there? It's not like I've ever seen the coast of Virginia, so I wouldn't know the difference or anything..."

And Summer had mentioned something like that.

"That's Greece," Jenny confirmed. "Santorini, to be precise. Cycladean blue and white, stunning views, and Atlantis itself. Why on Earth would you want to quit?" Aside from, you know, cancer.

"Uh," Cal scratched at the back of his head a little bit, trying to focus more on the idea of the Motherland just a hop, skip, and a jump from what was supposed to be Virginia, but there was smoke and cigarettes and they were powerful distractions.

Plus, he wasn't sure how to answer that question that didn't make him seem like more of a weirdo than he probably already was seeming. Somehow 'because every single time I taste tobacco, I taste her' just seemed a bit too creepy for just meeting someone.

"Personal reasons."

Jenny still thought he was crazy, but, "Fair enough. More for the rest of us."

Cal opened his mouth a little to say something in response, but then snapped it shut, changing his mind, with a light shake of his head, and didn't say anything. He was just feeling that this girl might cause a severe detriment on his progress if there were any further encounters with her after this.

Jenny would apologize for that, except for that she was, you know, completely lacking in shame. "Well, see you around, Cal. I'm in 401 if you change your mind about needing a light."

"...Yeah, cool," Cal nodded. "401. Right down the hall, I'm in 405..."

You know, if she'd care. Which she probably didn't, but he decided to throw it out there since they were practically neighbors.

And he was feeling the need for a cigarette even worse now.

Fantastic.
