Conflict Management [24.04]

Harriet smiled at everyone as they arrived. Once everyone was seated, she came around and leaned on the front of her desk. "The final today is simple. Answer one question, with reasons, and you're free to go. No one will fail as long as they're honest. This is our last class together, and I want to thank you all for being such good students. And Dr Wilson, for designing an excellent curriculum which I managed not to follow." She smiled again. "Enjoy your summers and do try not get into too much trouble. For those of you graduating this semester, I wish you all the best in your future."

Chris was there.

Lana smiled at him. "Last class we'll be in together."

"Yeah, I guess so," Chris said. "Are you excited about starting college?"

She shrugged. "Haven't really thought about it all that much. I've just been trying to get used to things back here. Wasn't even sure I was going to go for a while."

Chris frowned. "Why wouldn't you? You were so excited when you got your acceptance letter."

"You have to remember," she said quietly, "for me, I got that letter more than two years ago. I'd already long since given up any idea of going. And... I've had some problems settling back in here. Until a little while ago I was seriously considering trying to go back."

"You belong here though, Lana," Chris said. "I'm glad you decided to go."

"I hope so," she said with a small smile. "And as for the college. I just hope I can keep up. I feel so far behind in everything."

"What are your plans for the summer?" Chris asked.

She bit her lip. "I think I'm probably just going to stay here," she said. "Do the summer sessions if they still let seniors do that. I don't really have anywhere to go unless I ask Lex to let me live in the mansion with him and I really don't want to owe him anymore than I already do."

Chris nodded. "That's cool. I think I'll be sticking around too. Unless Wyatt wants to go do something fun before he starts school."

"Good," she said quietly. "It would be nice to have friends around as long as I'm here."

"We'll definitely have to hang out," Chris agreed.

"That would be nice," Lana said. "I've just felt so... diconnected from all the people I used to know. It's been hard trying to get back into the swing of things."

"Actually, I've kind of sucked at it," she admitted ruefully.

"Yeah, well, I haven't been great about it either lately either," Chris admitted.

"Concentrating more on Summer?" Lana said understandingly.

Chris looked confused. "No more than usual."

Lana smiled at him and let it go. "Okay," she said. She wanted to ask how he was doing since Summer said he'd had a hard time, but she was kind of afraid to poke her nose in.

"Well, it's nice to be able to talk with you."

"You too," Chris said. "Are you planning to go to the prom tomorrow? If not, you can come hang out with me and Summer. We're just gonna watch movies and eat pizza."

"I don't know," Lana said uncomfortably. "And thanks, but even if I'm not going... I'd feel like a third wheel. But I appreciate the offer."

Chris shrugged. "You know that me and Summer are not like that."

She bit her lip, not wanting to argue, but totally disagreeing. "I'd just feel funny. But thanks."

"Okay, well if you change your mind, you know where to find us," Chris said.

"Thanks," Lana said again, knowing there was no way in hell she'd interrupt the two of them. "It's really nice of you to offer."

"I want us to still be friends," Chris assured her.
