Ethics [Thursday, April 24]

As Anakin paced around the Danger room, he looked like he hadn't really gotten a good night's sleep in a few days.

Which was very true. Spending time in a swamp wasn't great for the back.

"Welcome to your Ethics final," he said, pacing around the room. "I will provide you with a series of scenarios. Go through each and provide the answers that best fit what you have learned through this class. Then explain your choice."

"I buggered off and slept through the seventies," Jenny offered as proof of her own shortcomings, since generally, yes, she did think she was All That.

Anakin smiled. "From what I know of this world's history, you missed a lot of terrible music, nothing more."

"Exactly." Anakin possibly didn't get what Jenny was. Hell, some days Jenny didn't get what Jenny was. "If I'd been awake? It could have been more."

"So you were avoiding responsibilities, then," Anakin said.

"Yes. The sixties...the sixties weren't good. I thought I was going to change the world, and you know what I did? I did some fighting, and I told good people where to stand and die, and to cap it off I had to put down a good friend who'd gone on a drug-fueled rampage, and...yes. I decided to stop dealing with it for a while, and if the world suffered for it, that's my fault." Jenny lifted her chin. And then, she was thinking, if Anakin was reading her mind, she'd gotten up just in time for the eighties, and the eighties had turned out to be full of crazy bitches.

"I can understand the impulse," he said. "You keep going so hard and for so long that you just want to stop." He gave her a rueful smile. "I don't think people like you and I are allowed to stop."

"I thought I could. I died," Jenny said softly. "I thought that might be restful. Instead, the ghosts of a bunch of shamans dragged me back to life and now I'm in high school."

"Children in my galaxy used to carry around stuffed versions of me and listen to stories of my adventures before going to sleep," Anakin replied with a small smile. "Now I get attitude from teenagers who all know better than I do."

"I'm not a teenager," Jenny pointed out. "Not really. Besides. Your way seems to have worked for you well enough." Little did she know.

Anakin snickered. "I'm not exactly 26, either," he said. "And my path is so full of u-turns and dead ends...it's why I teach this class. I'm trying to stop some of you from making my same kind of mistakes."

One side of Jenny's mouth quirked up. "Bet you I'm older. My 'guardian,'" and yes she did the air quotes, "thinks he's funny. But it was...an experience."

He smiled. "You use 'experience' like people I used to know used 'adventure'--something with a lot of low points you'd prefer not to talk about, I imagine."
