"Pretty women get away with everything. It's not fair," Sam whined sarcastically.

He hadn't really thought much about his birthday, so his surprise at hearing Dawn mention it might have been a little clear. "In that case, sure, you can borrow me."

"It's not! Just because you're blonde and cute, or brunette and kind of dangerous, or redheaded and slightly dorky, it's...okay, maybe they didn't get away with everything, but they'd have very different problems if they'd been ugly."

Like, for instance, growing up after them.

She grinned at Sam. "You forgot, didn't you?"

"Please tell me you're counting yourself in the 'pretty enough to get away with starting a war' category? Because you are."

Sam blushed a little and looked down at the desk. "I didn't forget completely. I just haven't had it on my mind, that's all."

She hadn't been, but a smile broke across Dawn's face, because it was nice that Sam thought so, even if he was wrong.

"Everything okay?"

"It's finals week," Sam said, like that explained everything.

"Geez, make me think it's something worse, why don't you," she frowned at him. "You shouldn't forget your own birthday, Sam. That's just--okay, I don't know what that is, but you shouldn't do it, and now I need to know what you want to do for it, because that should happen."

Sam was quiet for a few moments, deep in thought, before shrugging. "I don't know. Hang out with you and Dean?"

"Anything you want to do while we're hanging out?" Okay, so maybe she'd need to update Dean on this conversation.

"I don't care, really," Sam said. "Birthdays aren't a huge deal to me. At least, not mine. Not as much as other people's are."

Dawn didn't want to bring up the fact that this would be the last birthday she'd spend with him for a while, because it made her stomach twist in really not of the good ways.

"Okay, so, no dreams of an ideal birthday?" She started shaking her head. "Sad, Winchester. Truly pitiful."

"Hey, I'm not pitiful," Sam said, pouting at her playfully. "Seriously, my ideal birthday is you and Dean, and maybe some of our other friends. And a cake, if you guys feel like doing something extra."

Dawn sighed. Sam was really, truly hopeless sometimes. "We can probably manage that, if that's what you want."

"I want that if it's not too much to ask," Sam said.

"It's not too much to ask," she said, staring at him, "I didn't think it was enough, really."

"Okay, what would you consider enough?" Sam asked curiously.

"I don't know! Just, more." She became determined to think of something extra good. "And no, I don't have any ideas yet, but I will!"

Sam didn't want to laugh and offend her, or discourage her, but he couldn't help but snicker just a little. "Well, okay. I look forward to seeing what you come up with then."

"Oh, shut up," she griped. "Just for that, you deserve me giving you another old knife."

"Will you be wearing something nice when you give me the knife?" Sam asked. "Maybe something I can't let you leave the room wearing?"

Dawn looked at him very, very innocently. "What makes you think I'd tell you that, even if I was?"

"Because you don't want to leave me in anticipation for a week and a half?" Sam replied.

"I don't remember saying that." In fact, that sounded like a really good idea.

"That would be very mean of you," Sam said. "A mean girlfriend trick."

"That's right, it would, wouldn't it?" Dawn was grinning at him in a cat ate the canary kind of way. "I guess you'll just have to suffer."

Sam pouted openly at her. "Is it my birthday yet? Maybe I should get an early present for being good all year."
