Sam was a little wary as he went to open the library, wondering if there would be anything strange waiting inside for him like last week. Luckily, there was nothing in the library but the books. Ah, books.

"I'll remember you said that when it's your birthday," Sam replied. "We'll see how much you like the teasing and the waiting then."

"You're gonna tease me and make me wait when I won't have seen you for a month?" She pouted at him, sticking her lower lip out and trying to look as pitiful as she could. "Mean."

"No more mean than you," Sam said, trying not to think about the not seeing her part. "Maybe I'll only tease you for a few days."

"Oooh, what would you wear?" Her brain went off to some very pretty, happy places. "When you finally gave in, I mean?"

"That depends. What would you like me to wear?" Sam asked.

This would take very careful consideration. "Weeeeeelll, there's always the leather pants route, since you were pretty drunk last time, or the tux thing, but you'd strangle to death on the tie, a kilt's not really something I see you wearing," she mused, "but you're pretty darn hot just in a pair of jeans or a towel, so I mean, really, you're just eye candy no matter what you wear. Do I have to pick one?"

Sam laughed at her list. "Yes, you do. Or, at least narrow it down. That can be part of your present."

"My present will have parts?"

"Maaaaybe," Sam teased. "It'll depend on how often I get to see you and give you things."

"Soooooo, if I'd maybe gotten into a school that was in visiting distance, you wouldn't mind so much?"

"No, I wouldn't mind," Sam said, before realizing what she'd said. "Hey, did you get more acceptance letters?"

"Maybe?" She reached into her bag and pulled out a bunch of envelopes, dropping them on the desk in front of her. "Harvard and Yale said no, but they were long shots anyway. If you listen carefully, I think you can still hear them laughing up in Connecticut."

"Hey, they're not laughing. Eventually, they'll be crying because they'll have realized they made a mistake," Sam said.

Dawn snorted, then stared down at three large envelopes. Georgetown, UC Berkeley, and NYU. "I think I'm worried about opening them."

"They're pretty big envelopes," Sam pointed out. "Doesn't bad news usually come in little envelopes?"

"That's what Buffy and Willow said when they were doing this," she admitted, reaching for the top one. NYU. She started opening it with her fingers, then asked, "Do you have a letter opener, or a knife that needs sharpening?"

"Sorry, I'm fresh out of dull knives," Sam said, snickering and handing Dawn one of the letter openers from the desk.

"Darn," she took the letter opener, then a deep breath, before opening the envelope. "Dear Miss Dawn Summers, We are pleased to welcome you--"

She squealed, bounced, and opened the other two quickly, scanning the letters and squealing more. "I got in! I got in! And Berkeley wants to give me money!"

"They do?" Sam took the letters to scan them himself before coming around the desk to pull Dawn into a hug. "That's amazing!" he said, giving her a little twirl. "I told you colleges would love you."

She clung to him as she spun, giggling as she landed back on her feet. "You're right. Okay, happy now?"

"So, California's a doable roadtrip, right?"

"Very happy now," Sam said. "And California's totally doable. By plane or train or car or whatever."

"Sooooo," she'd have to check the numbers again later, but she was okay with this as her final decision, "looks like I'm gonna be a California girl again."

"Only if you want to be," Sam said. "Only if you're sure. This is your whole future we're talking about here."

Dawn stared at him. Seriously, was he kidding?

"A big part of your future?" Sam amended at the look on her face. "Am I making a bigger deal out of this than I should?"
