Dru's Classroom: the formation of a new club

After his meeting with Grissom, Angelus made his way to Dru's classroom. He smiled. She'd left it for him to open, just as she'd promised.

He opened the door, switched on the lights, searched Dru's supplies for some poster board, then got to work.

It was going to be a long day.

Anakin sat down in a corner of the room, a pad of paper in front of him and an attentive look on his face. Occassionally he would scribble something down.

In front of him was a box that he had taped a sign onto. It read: "Submit Candidate Questions Here."

Beka waved to Anakin. "Hey. Thought you didn't do politics." Her eyes lit with good humor.

Anakin smirked. "Normally, no. This I'm thinking of as more of a way to make sure that the nastier, unhanded parts of politics don't get in the way of real debate." He gestured to the box. "So, Candidate Beka. What kind of questions would you like to get tonight?" He smiled. "So I can write the opposite, of course."

"Tsk. Can't be trying to sway the debate now. I'll answer any question fairly asked. And if it's unfair..." She shrugged. "I'll answer it too. My main concern for the evening is not to lose my temper."

Anakin raised an eyebrow. "Yeah, going off the deep end would not be the way to make friends and influence people. " His eyes lit up for a moment and he began writing something on his pad of paper. "Sorry, thought of another question," he said.

He leaned back in his chair and ran a hand through his hair. "I think the questions will be fair. They'll be hard-hitting, but they won't be about things that don't matter relative to the competency of the candidate." He shrugged. "At least mine won't."

Beka smiled at Anakin. "Some of them won't. I'm prepared for that. Or making plans anyhow."

After a short pause, she asked, "An, can I ask a small favor? Not political. Personal."

He leaned closer. "Sure. What do you need?"

"A steadying hand." She smiled warmly. "Catch my eye now and again during the debate and help me stay cool?"

"Absolutely." He looked at her. "But I'm confident you'll be able to do just fine on your own."

"Thank you." She shrugged. "I wish I had half your confidence in me. And I confess I'm not sure where you got it. But I'm glad. Very."

When he finally had a free moment, Angelus sat down beside him.

"Okay," he said, with no other preamble, "my guess is tonight they're not actually going to let us ask things like 'So what makes you so damned special?'"

Anakin snickered. "Probably not. But if you couch it as 'why do you think you're the most qualified for this position?' it might fly."

"I feel like we need questions with zip," Angelus said. "Figure the teacher's going to ask all the boring stuff. Plus we've no guarantee that the questions we submit will even get asked. Let's not blow the wad on something that they can turn into a long and boring ramble about their mother."

"I so don't care about their mothers. Agreed." Anakin leaned back. "I figure the teacher's gonna ask about why they want the job and what makes them think they're so special." He looked at Angelus. "Do you think she'll have the ~~balls~~ ~~stones~~ ~~*something in Huttese*~~ killer instinct to ask them about the obvious divides in the student body at this point? In a way that won't lead them to wander around talking about diversity and blah freakin' blah?"

"I'd love to ask that one in a way that doesn't allow for backpeddling," Angelus said. "It's all well and good for some of them to disclaim that attack ad on Bel - and I'm sure Rory at least means it - but that doesn't negate that the ad was done in the first place."

"Exactly." Anakin tapped his pen on the pad of paper. "And in a way that doesn't lead into 'smear campaign are part of politics' or 'anonymous: can't prove anything.' How about something like, 'The recent smear campaign against VP candidate Belthazor brings some unpleasant truths life at Fandom High into stark relief. How would you, giving concrete examples, go about improving the quality of life for all students?' Gives them a way to talk about concrete changes for the magical population while also providing anyone who wants to take it a rope to hang themselves with if they'd rather rant about the dangerous, dangerous students that go here."

"That's a good start," Angelus said. "And if they weasel we can use tomorrow night to do followups. What about the weapons ban? Should we try to get them with anything there?"

"The weapons ban might be something we could save for the off-campus debate, unless the tone of tonight's debate starts to be useful, rather than longwinded and rambling." Anakin looked over and Angelus. "And I think Professor Jerusalem's more likely to sprout wings and fly than give anyone a weapon back on this campus with the tensions the way they are right now."

"True," Angelus said. "I'd like to have more control over any discussion in that area. I have to admit part of me is tempted to just watch the debate unfold and then plan strategy from there."

"I'm sure we can pass notes during the debate, see how things unfold. Plot a strategy for the next night's debate based off what we don't hear about tonight."

"What time's that starting anyway?"

"I think I remember the Pirate saying around 6 Fandom Standard, so...soonish?"

"You're friends with the pirate?" Angelus asked. "Think you can get a blurb onto the radio about tomorrow night?"
