Speech Comm

She walks in slowly, writes COMPLIANCE and OBEDIENCE on the board, and then pulls a chair out an sits.

All right, gang. Sorry about yesterday...now we're behind. Let's go.

We were talking about the difference between obedience and compliance...or if they are the same. We've brought moral codes into this discussion, thanks to Jack, as well as conditioned behavior.

Because of my personal life lately, I'd like to step away from your comfort zones and let's talk about "trusted professionals"...with the exception of me-your-teacher...why might you obey a person in authority such as a doctor, a lawyer, law enforcement, a scientist, a boss...what do all these positions have in common? Let's explore.

::nods:: Exactly. I guess it's.. it's the same as following orders becomin' conditioned behavior. After a while of being ordered around by an authority that's against what you want, a being could get conditioned to *not* follow orders too.

And, if someone's brain is *really* twisted, that could be what they wanted in the first place. You'd be obediently disobedient.

::thinks that that relates *way* too much to her life::

Yeah, it's probably just as easy to get a disobedient being to do what you want as it is an obedient person. Both are definitly predictable.

Maybe... inadvertant obediance? Is that even possible?

[identity profile] miss-monochrome.livejournal.com 2005-10-05 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's the closest thing I can think of too. I mean, your technically not *obeying* so it's not obedience... but it's technically not that you..you agreed or *want* to do what they had you do either, so it's not exactly compliance... It'd all be unintentional on your part...

You're being manipulated into doing something. Somehow, it's sicker that you don't know the reasons behind what you're doing. Hating the people that force you to do something is one thing. Loving them is just... wrong.

[identity profile] miss-monochrome.livejournal.com 2005-10-05 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
::nods:: Yeah, it's like...like spending your entire life rebelling against a mind-frelling government only to find out cycles later that they manipulated that rebellion against you and ended up making you do exactly what they wanted and turned you into a weapon for their frelling Greater Good.

::blinks:: Not that, uh, that I'd know anything about that...

But, yeah, doing that to...to somebody that you supposedly love? That's just... just frelled up.

Well... ::thinks:: Manipulation or..or influence seems to be the major part of obedience. It sounds like, from everybody else, that you obey people with status and influence because your sires or the...the culture around you influenced you into behaving that way. Or you rebel, because your sires behaved one way and..and you wanna act differently, which means they're still influencing you. And if you decide to go against all that, there's still the chance that your..your being manipulated into doin' what they wanted in the first place..

::frowns:: That...that's kinda depressing. Makes it sound like you never have, uh, a choice.
