Library [03/31]

As soon as Sam woke up, he started remembering what had happened over the weekend, and groaned. He couldn't remember doing anything too embarrassing, aside from having a very weird conversation with Zoe, but that didn't stop him from heading straight for the library in the hope of finding things to distract him during work.

"I'm not the little brother," Dean pointed out. "You are."

"I know," Sam admitted. "But I'm saying like, what if Zoe already had a son or daughter who was older than you? You'd be the little brother then too."

"She doesn't."

Sam resisted the urge to roll his eyes at Dean. "No, she doesn't. But could you just pretend with me for a minute?"

"Wouldn't be the same thing," Dean said with a shrug.

"You'd go nuts if you couldn't be in charge, or if you couldn't pull your 'I'm the oldest, so what I say goes' routine."

Dean chuckled and shook his head. "Dude, you don't have any idea what being the oldest is all about."

"Isn't that what it is? Being in charge and taking care of me?" Sam aske

"It's not all fun and games like you're making it sound," Dean said. "it's a serious responsibility."

"It's also not a 24/7 job like you make it out to be," Sam replied.

A ghost of a smile touched Dean's lips again. "Yeah, that shows what you know."

"Seriously Dean, when we're sleeping? You're allowed to not be thinking about me and watching over me."

Dean just shook his head, still wearing that faint smile. "I used to crawl into your crib so I was sure you were okay."

"You did?" Sam said, sounding surprised, but a little happy. "Dean, I'm not in a crib anymore. I'm not a baby. You don't have to worry about me all the time anymore."

"Hate to break it to you, Sammy, but it's not something that comes with an off switch."

"And there's nothing I can do to at least get you to tone it down?" Sam asked. "I don't want you to have to worry about me all the time."

"Dude, you're really going to give me a complex if you keep with the trying to get me to stop looking out for you," Dean joked, though there was something in his eyes that spoke of a hint of seriousness to the words.

Sam could see how serious Dean was about this, but he was feeling pretty serious about it too.

"I'm trying to lighten your load. I want to make things easier for you," he said. "I don't want you to worry so much and be so serious when it comes to being a big brother."

Dean shook his head. "Sammy, being your big brother is a huge part of who I am. I can't just change that without changing me."

"I still worry that you're going to get tired of dealing with me," Sam admitted.

Dean stared at him. "Dude, for someone as smart as you are, you can be a real idiot sometimes."

"What? I think that's an honest concern," Sam said. "If looking after me stresses you out all the time, and you don't want to be stressed anymore..."

Dean shook his head. "Not going to happen."

"Yeah, we'll see about that," Sam said. "So, did you do anything else fun over the weekend?"

"Got levitated by a Jedi," Dean said, though he wasn't quite sure if he should let the subject change.
